Utility
editA portal is intended to be a page which helps readers quickly find Wikiversity content related to a specific subject. One example of a mature portal on Wikipedia is Portal:Science. Portals are also useful for organizing resources around unique study areas.
Many portals on Wikiversity index information in a hierarchical fashion. Wikiversity has a small number of major portals organized around large subject areas such as Category:Life science. Portals can be created to serve the needs of specific topic areas, whether large or small.

Starting a new portal
editOne format for a portal page can be created by Template:Box portal skeleton. See Template talk:Box portal skeleton for instructions about how to start this kind of portal page. Contact Wikiversity:Support staff if you have any questions. See also: Make a portal and How to start a portal.
Another way to create a portal page is with Template:Box portal skeleton 2. This format uses slightly fewer boxes and includes a dynamic category tree system with a maintenance free directory of all content which relates to the portal. A standard right hand column includes wikiversity-wide exploration and help paths, while a standard footer includes a fuller range of links to other major portals. Contact User:McCormack if you have any questions or if you need variations on this for your portal.
