Wikio is an idea that was born back in the WOPN radio days of the Open Projects Network, now known as w:Freenode. It combines IRC, wiki and webcasting into a single model of collaborative control of open content audio using exclusively open source software. Let's discuss this concept. A new beginning

I'm not sure I can carry on an intelligent dialogue about astrobiology, but I'm game for either. I think I'm going to start with just some simple voice recordings, to get the ball rolling -- just to have some stuff to play with, as I'm sure we'll have some technical stuff to deal with. I just heard one of the talking heads of network television asking, "What is astrobiology?" I suggested that topic because it is of interest to me, but it might be productive to have a mix of participants who have different levels of familiarity with the topic. It might be worth exploring the idea that we can have a distributed system for creating audio resources...the participants need not be online at the same time. I have some schedule flexibility for the next month...in the past, it seemed like evening in North America often attracted the most participants. I think astrobiology is a great topic -- and before you mentioned it (and NASA), I hadn't heard of it. WV is all about learning, so I think we should be doing that ... so talking about astrobiology seems spot on.

As far as asynchronous comms goes, it's a great idea, but I think baby steps are the way to go. I've done a couple solo recordings, and the next step would be with another participant or two.

I did try teamspeak, skype, and a few other similar type products. They all seem similar, but some people are more familiar with one then another.

I think eves North America time is a good place to start. Maybe we could set something up for around 10PM EST one eve? Historybuff 21:16, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

• 10PM EST sounds okay. It is often useful to coordinate via IRC. I've started a Wikiversity page about Replacement of phosphorus by arsenic in living organisms...hopefully it can lead to some follow-up audio discussing the NASA-funded research and implications for the search for extraterrestrial life. --JWSchmidt 22:42, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

I've peeked into IRC on a couple occasions, but it seems awful quiet. I have a couple of test audio bits, I might do a few more and upload them to the Toolserver so we can work on editing them. What you see to your left is a Rough draft of Portal:Wikio, or what ever we decide to name this puppy. The name Wikio was chosen from the Wikia.com context and has commercial overtones, just like the normal broad perception of the term Radio. I'm not sure how Jimbo, Angela and the rest of the gang at Wikia will react|respond to Wikio.net, but that context is what drove the current document and Wikio has... ...something to do with fundraising.

Like, I hope the current document clearly states:

Wikio is|has|does what WE tell it to be|have|do.

OK... six months later... It's still in the Rough Draft stage but we have made quite a bit of progress. We've incorporated Voice over Internet Protocol using a temporary Asterisk IAX hub to record some interviews and chat sessions. (See details below). We've settled on the name Wiki Campus Radio and added some related learning projects to help generate some content: Getting started with sound recording, Audacity, Linux Server Administration and several others. The name isn't that important. We can call Jimbio or Wikiversio, or maybe Wikiverse Radio. What's important is that people will be able to hear what's going on and the music, news, info and other free content will be very cool and created in a community-wide open learning project :) CQ 23:41, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Skype test

Soliciting people for IAX tests

I think that Wikio might be well suited to be part of a proof of concept with regard to Remote Learning Development, at least as one component. If anyone would like to particpate in a test, let me know. Historybuff 08:09, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

There is a freely available multi-platfrom client available here. It looks like it's development isn't current, but it does work. There are other trial/shareware clients, and some other single platform free clients. Anyone interested in trying it?

We've opened Topic:VoIP and done some experiments. Even had a conference call between Historybuff, JWSchmidt and Me. I didn't have a mic, but I heard HistoryBuff talking and JW's tv going. I was using the MozIAX plugin for w:Mozilla Firefox. Kind of like it must've been back in the 1920s. Hehe. ...but we're coming along! CQ 06:23, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Impromptu Session

We had an off the cuff session when Rayc joined us in the IRC channel. Although it's after session 2, since it was unscheduled and unrecorded I think it's appropriate to chalk it up as a test session. We identified some technical hurdles that the chat has which need to be solved, as well as we got up to 4 particpants at one time. We also discussed some other applications of the technology, and CQ made some good points with regard to the Sandbox Server. We should have another formal session quite soon. Third Session

I suggest that participants talk about the contents of the Wikiversity:Sandbox Server page and what Wikiversity could do with such a server. I suggest that we try to develop a "distributed time" approach. Apparently HistoryBuff can leave the current server in a mode so that it automatically records. As soon as two people meet in the IRC chat channel, they can get started. Other people will be able to listen and add their own comments later. An edited version (six minutes) of the voice chat session is in .  Wikio 3.OGG . Help with ogg audio play. I plan to add my own commentary soon. This edited version was made from the much longer . I wanted to use GarageBand to edit the original sound file. GarageBand will open AIFF, WAV, AAC and MP3 files. I used the GUI converter called Super (for Windows, see this review) to convert the original OGG audio file into an AAC audio file. Using GarageBand, I edited out dead air, speech that was to quiet or too loud and off topic dialog. I just wanted a short audio clip that would demonstrate an ability to record multiple people having a discussion. GarageBand is also good at increasing the volume of quiet sounds and reducing the volume of loud sounds, so I was able to even out some very quiet input and some very loud input. GarageBand produces .m4a files, a form of MPEG4. For video OGG files, I use the conversion method shown at Podcasting. I decided to try Music Man demo to convert the audio m4a file to an OGG file. It worked fine, but I am in the market for a totally free alternative (note: the VLC media player for Mac OS X did this conversion, but produced an OGG file that is more than twice as large as the file made by Music Man). --JWSchmidt 03:55, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Another recorded session

Just an update -- we've been able to pull in up to 6 participants at one time, and had one participant from Australia join us.

That would be cool. We have, through IRC established a rapore with WikiCast, Hypatia, and even the commercial network ZtekRadio (through User:Drjayztekradio) and others are waiting in the wings. I think. We should try to "join forces". Volume

The volume is loud on these recordings...is it possible to make the volume lower? Or perhaps it is simply the fact that my local settings are set too high? --HappyCamper 04:05, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Can you specify a file that is particularly bad? For the ones that I have edited, I did make an attempt to get the volume within the dynamic range of my playback equipment. For example, with I can leave the internal volume control of QuickTime player at maximum and reduce my computer's output volume control to about the half way point for easy listening. It would be possible for me to make the volume of the fies lower, but you should be able to use your controls to reduce the playback volume to zero. --JWSchmidt 13:47, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

I only listened to Image:WCRApril28PartA.ogg. I was listening with a headset and had to turn the volume down to less than a slither in order for it to be comfortable. Can you describe what hardware, OS and ogg player you are using? "turn the volume down" <-- does this mean the volume control for your computer or the volume control for the ogg player? --JWSchmidt 23:26, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

I think this is a problem that we can eventually work out. (Sorry about any hearing loss Happy Camper). If we continue with VoIP ecperiments, we should be able to engineer a way to get uniform "input sensitivity" despite a wide range of microphone types (for example condenser, dynamic, line level, and bare telephone type input devices). It might be my fault, my mic-output mic and my line-level input tend to make me the quietest speaker and the dynamic range might be adjusted to me right now. :S We will work towards getting something that everyone is comfy with, and we do appreciate the feedback. I don't think we'll need more "channels" quite yet -- we have 24 hours in a broadcast day, and right now not even a full day worth of original programming (so far). We are definately open to running new shows, though, whether they be one-off or something regularly (or irregularly) scheduled.

I'm not sure what you mean by "new software" -- do you mean you'll need software to use WCR? For recording, it would seem so. For listening, we're going to try and provide both OGG and MP3 format output, I hope. Historybuff 06:11, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, in this case, I am not talking about preparation, I am talking about off-line broadcasting we can offer within weeks. Yeah, problem of WCR, is that it is to long, but on the other hand #Wiki-Campus-Radio is more userfriendly to new users. It maigt be modified to #wiki-campus-radio - as other channels are not using capitals.--Juan 23:41, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Wikinews also proposing a radio project

There's a proposal on Wikinews to set up a radio station that would incorporate content and initiatives from across the Wikimedia family. Initial ideas for Wikiversity's part in this (by the Wikinews community) include recording educational sessions based on Wikiversity content - eg a session on learning a particular language. If you want to add your own ideas, there's a section specifically for Wikiversity. Personally, I'd love to further such an initiative, and use it as a means to learn about the process of doing radio - thereby inviting people to get involved - as much as about learning how all projects can be used for educational ends. I don't think it needs to be limited to recording spoken versions of Wikiversity pages - though that's certainly part of what we could do. :-) Cormaggio ^talk 14:45, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Internet Radio Stations

Hi,

How does the wiki community feel about collaborating with student run radio stations? I am part of a student run radio station in the University of California San Diego. This station is internet only and plays strictly "independent" music/programs (that is, material that is not easily accessible in popular media).

Policy issue - Religon..

It was my understanding that in terms of direct religious broadcasting (i.e Preaching), this is something that would definitly not be possible as it would violate standing policy (including NPOV).

However, it has been noted that one of the Gospels had been suggested in the possible projects for the Active stream.

Policy issue -Wiki Politics...

In a disscussion on he #Wikimedia-radio it was suggested that WCR adopt a policy of not airing 'endorsments' in respect of on-wiki politics.

However I am starting a disscussion here to try an develop some editoral/contributor guidance on this issue.

WCR is a proposed hyper-public Internet meeting place. It is built on FLOSS for developing and distributing free content and shall (if I have anything to do with it) not become a haven for censors, trolls and naysayers. CQ 17:33, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

The magic of Whole Wheat Radio and it's overall platform has been designed by Jim Kloss...Master Programmer ;-) It is summer in Alaska right now and summer is a very short season up there. This is one of Jim's busiest times and he tends to spend much less time at the computer while he races to accomplish necessary warm weather projects. He is the man behind the curtain of our OZ, and he will have to be the one to answer any questions concerning his alteration of and additional coding he has personally interfaced with the Mediawiki software. He morphs into a codehead when the Alaskan weather turns icy!

WWR's community powered radio ties both the physical community of Talkeetna, Alaska with the virtual community. If you have the time, you can read What is Whole Wheat Radio to see our mission and core values. You might also take a look at WWR's basic rules for more insight and see if we are still a desirable model for WCR's endeavors. For now you might want to also take a look at our technical glossary to see what sort of platforms are utilized...such as Jasper.

Just to note...we have had a few discussions, cussings, and battles on the Mother Ship Wikipedia concerning WWR's notability. For now I guess we are considered notable...not sure for how long though. I just wanted to throw this tidbit out there to let all of you know we are considered outlaws in some circles, but that is alright with us! Heh. Yeah we know about wikibattles around here for sure. w:Wikiversity is ostensibly an extension of Wikipedia as a Wikimedia sisterproject, so we have our share of wikicratic spillover. We've suffered a few cussings too. Hopefully when we get up into the realm of sound with actual sonic content, we'll be able to grow in both size and social maturity.
