Wikiversity:Template task force
Welcome to the Template task force! This is part of the MediaWiki Project.
This is (will be) a guide to creating, perfecting, deploying and documenting templates used at Wikiversity.
Introduction to templates
editA template is a page created to be included in other pages. Templates usually contain repetitive material that might need to show up on any number of articles or pages. They are commonly used for boilerplate messages, standard warnings or notices, infoboxes and similar purposes.
The most common method of inclusion is called transclusion, where the wikitext of the target page contains a reference to the template, using the {{Template name}}
syntax. Another method is substitution, where the content of the template is copied into the wikitext of the target page, just once, when it is saved.
A quick guide to templates gives a brief introduction to the subject. There is further help from MediaWiki at Help:Templates and Manual:Advanced templates.
Prerequisites
editPlease take the Wikiversity:Guided tour if you haven't already.
Recommended:
See also Topic:MediaWiki and join the MediaWiki Project if you wish.
Immediate needs
editTemplates imported from other projects often need updating to reflect the needs of Wikiversity, and documentation of their intended use, variations, and substitution procedures, etc. See a complete list of templates. Please include templates that need work below along with a brief summary of what attention is needed:
- Categorising uncategorised templates!
- Category:Protected templates. Go through these and see which ones are actually protected or not.
- {{Welcome}}. Please help keep an eye on user creation log and add this template quickly to their user discussion page.
- {{wikiversity}}. Make sure wikipedia articles point to the right place at Wikiversity and only appear in the External links section of Wikipedia articles.
- Reading Group template for Wikipedia -- similar to the above template but pointing towards Portal:Reading groups as well.
- A basic set of page navigation templates such as those used at the bottom of w:Music genre and w:History of Europe. See {{AI navbar 0}} for a simple example.
- See pages tagged for attention from this task force at Category:TemplateTaskforce
{{Administering Wikiversity}} - this is what made what you see to the right
- Wikiversity:Custodians - custodians use the {{custodian}} (sysop) template - {{custodians}} is under development
- Wikiversity:Catalyst - any {{user}} can become a {{catalyst}} by volunteering and taking initiative.

General knowlege for template editors:
Important: See Category:Page creation templates for ideas on how to create whole pages from templates called "boilerplates".
Learning projects
editWe will learn some fundementals by creating some new templates. Please list needed needed templates here:
- Template:TemplateTaskforce - Place {{TemplateTaskforce}} on the Template_talk page associated with a template that you feel needs attention. Tagged pages will be sorted into Category:TemplateTaskforce for browsing.
- Template:Wiki101 came from and goes along with lesson Wiki 101
- Template:User oops is a fun template to look at and study. It's used as an example at Wiki 101.
- Barnstorm (Barnstar Brainstorm) - This is where we discuss award templates for Wikiversity.
- Avoid /potential conflicts, and name your templates specifically
- Wikiversity:Mentors. Create and use mentor templates so learners can find you.
- ...edit me to add an interesting template...
Language and translation
editThis Wikiversity page is under construction. If you see a Red link, turn it into a Blue link. If you see something that needs Translation, translate it. If you don't agree with something or have a question, simply go to Wikiversity talk:Template task force with your concerns. This is a wiki!
Getting Started
editMake sure you have read through Wiki 101, paying particular attention to the Templates section. That section deals with small templates that are added to pages as reusable infoboxes, navigational aids and such.
Our textbook is the Help:Templates section of the MediaWiki Handbook. Please sign up below and introduce yourself at Wikiversity talk:Templates.
