Users with rights (Curators, Custodians) are currently able to use Special:Import to import from Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Commons, Simple Wikipedia, and Beta Wikiversity. There is a discussion at Wikivoyage that would require importing an article from there before it is deleted.

According to meta:Help:Import, adding a wiki to import from requires a community discussion and vote. Please indicate whether you support Curators and Custodians being able to import from Wikivoyage. I'm sometimes asked to help with translations which could be better performed here by importing the article here, e.g., Messel Pit, which is rich with fossil descriptions, on the German Wikipedia. The additional coverage could then be added to the English Wikipedia articles, e.g., Messel Formation or Messel pit. Perhaps confirmed users should be allowed to import rather than having to request a Curator, Custodian or Bureaucrat to do it. --Marshallsumter (discuss • contribs) 06:43, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

According to meta:Importer, an alternative approach to importing an article from another wiki is to export it and then Upload Import. Upload Import requires being a member of Importer. We don't currently have any importers, and no one has the right to assign someone to the Importer group.

Do we want Bureaucrats or Bureaucrats and Custodians to be able to assign users to the Importer role? Without this role, we need to request stewards to upload import for us. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 00:18, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

None that I know of. But as I understand it, the process is relatively complex. My guess is that, in practice, this would be similar to the interface administrator or bot rights. While it could be granted to any custodian or curator, it needs to be someone familiar with the technical details (editing XML files, etc.). I'm curious @Dave Braunschweig: what is a practical use case for uploadimport here on en.wv - when/why would would it make sense over import? e.g., have we already been doing this via stewards? -- Jtneill - Talk - c 14:30, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If we had the ability to uploadimport, we wouldn't need to have individual wiki source discussions like the one above. If there was a one-off request for something like Wikivoyage, or any of the non-English wiki projects, we would be able to process that request without waiting for a community vote and a Phabricator configuration change. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 20:11, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Extension:WikiSEO

I'm looking to include meta tags in the citation_* format to WikiJounal pages (see Template:Article Gscholar). However, all < and > are converted to &lt; and &gt;, so doesn't get correctly identified by search engines or index correctly.

It turns out that Extension:WikiSEO directly addresses these problems. Would it be possible to install this extension with $wgMetadataGenerators[] = "Citation"; in the LocalSettings.php? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 02:16, 18 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't appear to be installed on any WMF wikis at the moment, so it will need to go through security review. This extension can add proprietary tags for Twitter, which I suspect wouldn't be wanted on a Wikimedia site. These can be turned off with the following I think:

@Evolution and evolvability: I think probably an initial Phabricator task to request adding it, so it can be discussed with a wider group than just here. Then, if it's decided that it's wanted and feasible, a second task to undertake security review. IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation

Please see meta:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation. At some point, the wiki environment will change so that anonymous users have a session ID rather than an IP address. There would effectively become two different types of anonymous users, those with a new session and returning anonymous users who don't clear their cookie but also don't have a username for login. Administrators would still be able to access IP address information for session users through a new right that will be added. Importupload right to bring in PLOS Topic Page review articles

I'm looking to import approx 40 pages and their edit history under CCBY4.0 from an external wiki (topicpageswiki.plos.org), specifically, those within this category (full XML dumps available via their Special:Export page). However to import these XML dumps, requires the importupload user right (a user right that currently noone on wikiversity has but can be granted by a bureaucrat).

I would therefore like to propose that the right is applied to either Dave_Braunschweig or Jtneill (alternatively I am happy to have the userright applied to me if they prefer). What do people think? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 10:59, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I have now completed the intended imports so am happy to have the ImportUpload right removed again.
Some observations:
  • The maximum filesize allowed to be imported appears to be ~15Kb. Since the exported XML of pages with lots of revisions can easily be much larger than that, it can be necessary to manually go into the XML file and split the <revision>...</revision> sections (being careful to maintain the XML header info) into multiple files. Generally mainspace articles can't be batched together, but talk, files, and templates are generally smaller and have fewer revisions so can be batched.
  • I should have done the prefix editing ([[wp: -> [[w:) by batch find-replace in my folder of XML files.
  • Importing files across only imports the description, not the file itself, so these still have to be manually uploaded.
One persisting issue:
  • topicpageswiki used the old template:cite_pmid system. This seems to call some lua module via {{#pmid: {{{1|}}} }}, but I've no idea how it works, so the system is broken here. Any ideas for getting it working here? Even if it were temporary, might might make it possible to substitute those references before deprecating the cite_pmid system again.
I've a little cleanup to do moving articles to subpages to organise them a bit better, but overall seems to have worked well.
