centralauth login maintenance on 26th November 2019
editThere is technical work that is needed on the databases of some wikis (wikiversities will not be directly impacted by the read-only period, but meta: will not be editable.) However, "This also includes centralauth database, which means some operations might fail during the read-only period, such as: GlobalRenames, Changing/Confirming emails, logging into new wikis, password changes..." See phab:T238046 for details. This will occur at 26 November at 06:00 (UTC) and should take no more than 30 minutes and could be quite shorter.[1] --mikeu talk 23:26, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
Wikiversity teaching expert needed
editCan anyone suggest one or more editors who have been using Wikiversity to teach professionally at a post-secondary level, and would be willing to give me some advice from their experience? Any suggestions greatly appreciated! HLHJ (discuss • contribs) 04:46, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- Anyone who can answer this, please add {{Ping|koavf}} in your response. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 06:26, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- @HLHJ: @Koavf: Happy to help if I can. Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 12:08, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- @HLHJ: @Koavf: Also User:Dave Braunschweig and User: Guy vandegrift. There are also others teaching using Wikiversity that you can learn from by example. See Collaborative Learning/Examples. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 13:01, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
- @HLHJ: @Koavf: You might say that I am obsessed with using wikis to teach professionally at the post-secendary level. See Quizbank/Creating a bank so students won't ''break the bank''--Guy vandegrift (discuss • contribs) 15:02, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you all very much, I wasn't expecting a response this quickly! Just the Userpage links you've provided have kept me busy looking through content for a while. I'm working on Ga naar Wikipedia, a howto for doing an academic's standard professional tasks on the Wikimedia wikis. As you can see, I've now used User:Dave Braunschweig and User:Jtneill/Teaching as examples of course content on Wikiversity. Guy vandegrift, I didn't see a central page I could link to for your course material, but two examples suffice, so no worries. May I suggest, by the way, that Cmglee has an interest in illustrating things like some of the physics-experiment diagrams you lack?
One specific query; is there a tool that turns a set of wiki-markup pages into a slideshow, analogous to the W3C's HTML Slidy? Something you could fullscreen and use at a talk?
I am a bit nervous about writing a how-to for something which I haven't actually done. I have no idea if my Ga naar Wikipedia#Education statements about using Wikiversity for education are sound or offbase, and I know that they are very vague and general. Advice, comments, criticism, and edits are very welcome. Thanks again to you all. HLHJ (discuss • contribs) 03:52, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- It might also be worth taking a look at the HGAPS pages on psychology topics as another example of using wikiversity for the production of teaching materials. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 10:06, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- @HLHJ: I made a few minor edits, but overall the content is accurate for what you are presenting. I would recommend adding an introductory statement explaining the title. "Ga naar" seems to be "go to" in Dutch, but it isn't clear why the article (on English Wikiversity) wouldn't be titled Go to Wikipedia, or perhaps Learning with Wikimedia, since it addresses learning on most of the Wikimedia projects. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 13:24, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help, Dave Braunschweig. I think you are right about the title; it's what pushed me to start writing it, but it's not informative. "Learning with Wikimedia" is a bit general for my scope... the scope is more "how to do ~all the professional tasks of an academic (or scholar) on Wikimedia". Snappy. I'll have a think about the title. I've added HGAPS, T.Shafee; thank you for the suggestion. HLHJ (discuss • contribs) 02:05, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
- @HLHJ: Think about whether a specific title helps people find the resource or hides it from a typical search. A scholar would be learning with Wikimedia? An academic would be teaching with Wikimedia? Teaching and learning with Wikimedia? Just some ideas. You'll figure out what works best for you and your audience eventually. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 13:39, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
- @HLHJ: This is an excellent overall introduction to the possibilities of Wikimedia sister projects for scholarly work. I agree with Dave about revising the title. As far as I know, there is no HTML tidy equivalent way of preparing slides within the Wikimedia projects. Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 20:12, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you, Jtneill, Dave Braunschweig! . "Go unto Wikimedia, academics!" would keep some of the snap of the quote that inspired me, but might not be a great search term. I'm still not quite sure how I'd title it descriptively. "Using Wikimedia for your day-to-day academic work"?
- I've proposed the creation of a wiki-based slideshow at the Community Wishlist Survey. It's at Wiki-based slideshows/posters. Comments and crit welcome, and I hope that anyone who likes the idea will go vote for it! HLHJ (discuss • contribs) 23:58, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
- The proposal for wiki-based slideshows has moved due to a merge. One vote so far... does anyone think this is a good idea? HLHJ (discuss • contribs) 19:09, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
- Is there a reason why RefToolbar is not available on Wikiversity? It seems as though it would be really useful. HLHJ (discuss • contribs) 01:47, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

outstanding Phabricator requests
editRE: Add the Extension:WikipediaExtracts and phabricator:T148848 which stalled 3 years ago. The extension has not been developed since 2017. Do we still want to pursue this or cancel the request? @Felipe Schenone: --mikeu talk 16:33, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
- Cancel - I see little chance that it will be completed. --mikeu talk 16:33, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
- This request has been closed and a different one will be opened soon. --mikeu talk 07:50, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- But it is still needed. Juandev (discuss • contribs) 07:57, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- Please see the note at Talk:WikiJournal_User_Group#Extension:InterwikiExtracts. It sounds like the intent is to submit a new request that is different from the first. I'm not sure about the differences but you can ask there. --mikeu talk 08:01, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
Community Wishlist 2020
editThe 2020 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on November 11, 2019, or comment on other proposals to help make them better.
This year, we’re exclusively focusing on smaller projects (i.e., Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews). We want to help these projects and provide meaningful improvements to diverse communities. If you’re a member of any of these projects, please participate in the survey! To submit proposals, see the guidelines on the survey page. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!

questions
editthanks for the welcome also what can i write for the project? Thanks CezauroBlanca (discuss • contribs) 15:20, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
can i write about Boston? or other locs? Or animals? Is this acceptable? CezauroBlanca (discuss • contribs) 15:27, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
- @CezauroBlanca: Welcome! See my response at User talk:Dave Braunschweig#Write?. If you just want to write, you can start writing about anything you like. Whatever you create is likely to be moved to Draft: space until you have time to expand on your ideas. Please note that Wikiversity is focused on learning by doing. Ultimately, the goal is not just to write, but to write something that helps others engage in the learning experience as well. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 15:33, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
