Initial suggestions

@Mkatemoore: Thanks for tackling this topic. Some initial suggestions:

Heading casing

edit

Hi Mkatemoore. FYI, the recommended Wikiversity heading style uses sentence casing. For example:

Self-determination theory rather than Self-Determination Theory

Here's an example chapter with correct heading casing: Growth mindset development

Further suggestion of useful Wikipage

edit

@Mkatemoore your topic piqued my interest as I'm very interested in how Ayahuasca affects the brain!

Further to James' comment, I just stumbled across this chapter from a previous year which might be helpful -

Ayahuasca and emotion

Good luck :) Beabosborne (discusscontribs) 11:00, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Topic development feedback

edit

The topic development submission has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is below, plus see the general feedback page. Please also check the page history for changes made whilst reviewing the chapter plan. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Marks are available via UCLearn. Marks are based on the latest version before the due date.

  1. The title and sub-title are correctly worded and formatted
  1. Very good 2-level heading structure
  2. To improve, simplify heading structure to focus on psychological neuroscience about A; drop/reduce un/less related topics (e.g., drug tourism). There is only just enough in the maximum word count to allow a good answer to the core question. Related to this, the topic isn't A and motivation and emotion. it is A and the brain (focusing on M and E aspects of the brain).
  3. Reasonably good alignment between focus questions and heading structure, but aim for closer alignment
  1. Good
  2. Move the scenario or case study into a feature box (with an image) to the start of this section to help catch reader interest
  3. Add a brief, evocative description of the problem/topic
  4. Closer alignment between the sub-title, focus questions, and top-level headings is recommended
  5. Replace questions about motivation and emotion with a question about affects on the brain/motivational and emotional experience
  6. Ethics question not central to this topic; only focus on directly relevant questions because there isn't scope is this exercise for additional material
  1. Insufficient development
  2. Insufficient use of citations
  3. Strive for an integrated balance of the best psychological theory and research about this topic, with practical examples
  4. It is unclear whether the best available psychological theory and research has been consulted in the preparation of this plan
  1. Note/check difference between affect and effect
  2. For sections which include sub-sections, include the key points for an overview paragraph prior to branching into the sub-headings
  3. Avoid providing too much background information. Aim to briefly summarise general concepts and provide internal links to relevant book chapters and/or Wikipedia pages for further information. Then focus most of the content on directly answering the core question(s) posed by the chapter sub-title.
  4. Conclusion (the most important section) hasn't been developed
  5. What might the take-home, practical messages be? (What are the answer(s) to the question(s) in the sub-title and/or focus questions?)
  1. One or more relevant figure(s) presented
  2. Use APA style for figure captions
  3. Cite each figure at least once in the main text using APA style (e.g., see Figure 1)
  4. Consider increasing image size from to make it easier to view
  1. Excellent in-text interwiki links for the first mention of key terms to relevant Wikipedia articles and/or to relevant book chapters
  2. Promising use of one or more scenarios/examples/case studies
  3. Promising use of quiz question(s)
  4. Focus the quiz question(s) on the take-home messages for each focus question
  5. Also consider using one or more tables to summarise key information
  1. Good
  2. Are there any systematic reviews about this topic?
  3. Move Wikipedia links to See also
  4. Move non-academic / non-peer reviewed sources to External links
  5. Check and correct APA referencing style:
    1. capitalisation
    2. make doi hyperlinks active (i.e., clickable)
  6. Use APA style or wiki referencing style, but not both. Currently, a mixture of referencing styles is used.
  1. See also
    1. Excellent
  2. External links
    1. To be developed (see Tutorial 2)
  1. Good
  2. Description about self provided
  3. Consider linking to your eportfolio page and/or any other professional online profile or resume such as LinkedIn. This is not required, but it can be useful to interlink your professional networks.
  4. A link to the book chapter is provided
  1. Excellent – at least three different types of contributions with direct link(s) to evidence

Key Info: Ayahuasca and DMT

edit

Hi there,

What an interesting topic! I am looking forward to reading the finished chapter.

Although your chapter is in the earlier stages of production, I wanted to share with you a very useful link to a peer reviewed journal that will give you some very key information regarding ayahuasca in the psychedelic sense and the therapeutic benefits:https://web-p-ebscohost-com.ezproxy.canberra.edu.au/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=0&sid=f9f388fc-dd1a-479f-98cb-14552d5a2679%40redis

if the link does not work, please see:

Kjellgren, A., Eriksson, A., & Norlander, T. (2009). Experiences of encounters with ayahuasca—“the vine of the soul”. Journal of psychoactive drugs, 41(4), 309-315. https://doi.org/10.1080/02791072.2009.10399767

It is crucial to understand that the therapeutic benefits that you talk about in your chapter regarding the ayahuasca plant are primarily attributed to the combination of ayahuasca and the plant DMT, not just the ayahuasca plant by itself, which is a very significant distinction this chapter should make.

The article provided puts all of that in context, which would be a great base for your discussion.

I hope that is helpful! Best of luck! Danikollas (discusscontribs) 07:59, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

General Thoughts & Feedback

edit

Hi!

Sorry for what might be somewhat late feedback on your chapter here.

I want to start off by saying you have written an incredibly interesting and well-spoken chapter on a great topic. It is well formatted and does not have any parts that stretch on for too long over any others. You also did a very thourough job at hyperlinking relevant pages and articles for new words and ideas that were brought into discussion when needed.

I also really love your use of having smaller individual quizzes at stop points throughout the chapter, rather than one big one towards the end. This does a great job at keeping the reader engaged and continuing to pay attention.

One of the only real suggestions I could possibly make, is perhaps lessening some of the wording for Figure 7 itself, to have it explained within your paragraph and then referenced to. But this is not a large issue and I do not think it takes away or distracts majorly as the context for it still makes sense.

Overall a great chapter and very well done/good luck for anything left with it.
