Many thanks James. I'm rethinking the structure. I'm feeling it will be far more useful to end users (vols and those who create experiences for them) if the structure
- briefly intro'ed the key theories
- then focused on what the theories tell us about the motivations behind:
1 why vols join in the first place
2 why vols stay
3 why vols leave
I'll keep reading and see if the refs support the structure/approach above. It feels more practical than the current approach/structure. I might also contact a few people I know who work directly with env vols and ask them what they would like to see/read so it is directly relevant to what they do in the real world.

This may help the audience begin to understand the different types of motivations that exist in this field... and then they can explore the ideas/theories more as they read your chapter.
