At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Mr. J. Carter (at 697) was dressed as a "Courtier of Elizabeth," in "black velvet, massively trimmed with jet; trunks and cloak to correspond."^[1]^{:p. 34, Col. 3a}
