Uncategorized pages edit
Hi. I recently filed a bot request (at Wikiversity:Bots/Status#DannyS712 bot) about tagging pages that are uncategorized. What does the community think about what pages should be tagged? Thanks, --DannyS712 (discuss • contribs) 15:12, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- I'm confused about what value this would add versus Special:UncategorizedPages. Would the tagging system somehow make a different or better list than this special page? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 15:29, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- It would make it easier to deal with uncategorized pages. Special:UncategorizedPages is cached, so it doesn't always reflect the current status. It also cannot easily be parsed by external tools. --DannyS712 (discuss • contribs) 01:23, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
In viewing the current 4146 pages in Special:UncategorizedPages, about 50 % or more are from our paid editors conducting classes here at Wikiversity. The others are scattered contributions from new editors over time. I'm not sure it's worth even a bots time? --Marshallsumter (discuss • contribs) 15:36, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Marshallsumter: "our paid editors" is an inappropriate description. Wikiversity isn't paying them, so they are not "our paid editors". I am not aware of anyone being paid to edit Wikiversity at this time, so they are also not "our paid editors". Some users may be paid to teach a class, but there isn't any institution that would require that Wikiversity be used to teach that class. By comparison, there have been contributors who have tried to be paid for editing Wikiversity in the past. All solicitation links were removed, and the users were warned and/or their accounts were blocked. This community does not support paid editing. @DannyS712: I appreciate you being willing to use your bot to improve Wikiversity. I think there are least two different situations with uncategorized pages. There are uncategorized main (landing) pages, and there are uncategorized subpages. I don't have a problem with adding {{Uncategorized}} to landing pages, as long as the bot also reviews all pages that have that tag to ensure that any that do have another category have the tag removed.
Tagging subpages is more challenging. Subpages are generally associated with a particular course. I don't think adding {{Uncategorized}} to these pages would add value. We could add {{CourseCat}} to put them in the course category, but that will create a number of missing course categories that would need to be added. Perhaps that's a good thing, and could then be cleaned up relatively quickly.
I'm less concerned about the caching of the report, unless you are using the report to add categories and the caching is getting in your way. If you are using Python, there are relatively easy ways to parse Special:UncategorizedPages. Hey there. The second (September) iteration of draft recommendations (m:Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Recommendations) are published at Meta-wiki. What we reviewed and discussed in the past month was the first (August) iteration. The consultation on partial and temporary Foundation bans just started edit
Hello,
In a recent statement, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees requested that staff hold a consultation to "re-evaluat[e] or add community input to the two new office action policy tools (temporary and partial Foundation bans)".
Accordingly, the Foundation's Trust & Safety team invites all Wikimedians to join this consultation and give their feedback from 30 September to 30 October.
How can you help?
- Suggest how partial and temporary Foundation bans should be used, if they should (eg: On all projects, or only on a subset);
- Give ideas about how partial and temporary Foundation bans should ideally implemented, if they should be; and/or
- Propose changes to the existing Office Actions policy on partial and temporary bans.
