language links via Wikidata are coming

Hi everyone :)

I wanted to let you know that Wikiversity is scheduled to receive the first round of Wikidata support on February 23rd. This means you will be able to manage the links between different language versions just in one place (on Wikidata) instead of having to do it in each article. I hope this will help you by reducing some work. If that goes well you'll receive access to the data on Wikidata a while later (date will be scheduled later). If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask on d:Wikidata:Wikiversity or d:Wikidata:Project chat.

But you didn't link us to a discussion on beta. You linked to a previously dead discussion on meta. Regarding the user's comment on Wikikultur, that appears to be a localization issue. That user's home wiki is fr.wikiversity rather than en.wikiversity. Is there a discussion somewhere else we should be reading? -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 23:26, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

A learning project on art history or studying culture would be fine. Hosting art or literature is not within our primary scope, but learning about these subject definitely is. I think French Wikiversity scope is more or less the same. Here is the full quote : Wikiversity is fine for research original works, even in music for example. But it's not a place for artistic or other cultural original works. Now, I didn't wake up this project my self, I have been contacted by an other user which would be interested for such a project. I didn't abandoned this idea, but I'm currently busy with other Wikimedia involvement, especially rising Esperanto Wikiversity out of beta and developing Strasbourg's Wikimedia local group. Error message in a Wikiversity page

At Automatic_transformation_of_XML_namespaces there is now the following error message:

Purging the server page cache should resolve the issue. You can force a purge by appending "?action=purged" to the page URL in your browser. I'll also add a Purge option to the pulldown "More" menu at the top of the page. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 16:24, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

That was my fault. I think it has now been fixed but there are still some lingering aftereffects in the server cache which can be flushed with the purge. Sorry about that. --mikeu ^talk 20:57, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

How to add "swf" files?

My friend is looking to upload a file on Wikiversity, upload a "swf" file on Wikiversity. It, obviously, does not allow it at Special:Upload. Is there anyway for him to upload the swf file he is wanting to upload? Thanks! ---Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 16:29, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Category Structure

I've started a discussion at Wikiversity talk:Categories#Category Structure that highlights recent changes to the top level category structure and why those changes were made. Please review and provide feedback as appropriate. Two questions: (1) How do I see a list of the top level categories? (2) Is it our intent to restrict non-top level categories? Another way of asking the second question is this: I know we want to avoid polluting mainspace with trivial articles, but should I also be trying to restrict what goes into "category space"?--Guy vandegrift (discuss • contribs) 21:30, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Category:Contents is the container for the top-level categories I've been working on. There's also Category:Categories, which still needs work. Extraneous categories are only a problem when we use mw:Extension:DynamicPageList to display category members on a page. As I've been updating portals, I've been using the dynamic listings, with the hope that by updating category members, we can maintain portals automatically. That has required a good bit of cleanup on each of the top-level categories, as content is often added to the top level rather than an appropriate subcategory.

I think our main category structure should be something easy to follow. That's why I went with Wikipedia lists to identify subcategories. I assume they've spent many hours debating what things are in each category, and we can benefit from their collective shared wisdom.

To answer your question, adding categories isn't really a problem. It's then adding those categories to categories high in the overall structure that's a problem. Then someone needs to clean up occasionally. But adding subcategories to Physics, or Physics Labs, or similar shouldn't make a difference anywhere except on the Physics portal. -- Dave Braunschweig (discuss • contribs) 21:58, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Research project on artist biographies

I'd like to test the waters about a possible research project for collecting personal histories of notable artists. This is in the context of the Art+Feminism campaign and the Guggenheim GLAM initiative, with the project to be started by the Guggenheim. There are quite a few contemporary mid-career artists who have almost no biographical information published in secondary sources, which only discuss their specific works and art criticism, accomplishing the minimum of establishing Wikipedia notability, but leaving in the end a rather bare article.

Any personal details for a Wikipedia article would generally have to be drawn from a random grabbag of social media postings — as an alternative, we could pursue a project of proper artist interviews that would indeed be considered self-published sources in the Wikipedia sense (in that it is drawn from the artist's own words in the interview), but that would be able to give a considerably more thorough and systematic overall view of the subject.--Pharos (discuss • contribs) 22:21, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Wikimania 2016: call for posters, discussions and trainings

Hi people,
the calls for posters, discussions and trainings for Wikimania 2016 are officially opened, you can find all the relevant links on the conference wiki:

The calls will be closed on March 20.

Posters will be reviewed just to make sure that there aren't things which are too much out of scope. Since we have a whole village we will surely find places to attach them, even if we they will be a lot!

Discussions will be managed by a guiding committee who will work on the wiki to meld all the proposals and suggestions.

Trainings will be reviewed by the programme committee. Please note that we request that each training has at least 3-5 interested attendees in order to be put in the programme.

By the beginning of April we will have a first list of all the accepted proposals.

If you have questions we suggest you to ask them on the discussion pages on wiki, so that everyone will be able to see them (and their answers, of course).

On the page School:Music and Dance, there is the section School:Music and Dance#Active participants :

• Can we consider that an active participant who has not participated since 2 or 3 years is not actually very active ?
• May I do some cleaning in this section ?
