Hi there, I have enjoyed reading your page so far. One thing of note is in your APA 7 reference list I have noticed your missing the DOI url for the journal websites for your articles. Heres a link if you need a reminder for the layout :) https://libguides.jcu.edu.au/apa/reference-list --Jacqueline Di Fronzo (discusscontribs) 03:07, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Initial Thoughts

edit

I think you have done well in your scope of research, I it's important to consider background and social influences when talking about smoking/vaping so well done. If you wanted to link your case study back to a section on adolescent vaping effects I have found this article on how nicotine effects the adolescent brain which I found interesting. You have done a great job! - Author Scarlet M U3229957 (discusscontribs) 11:49, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Additional case studies

edit

Hello, I have read through your chapter and enjoyed what you have completed so far. One thing I wanted to mention, which you may have already considered, is including more case study examples throughout your chapter. It would be interesting to follow someone who is involved in vaping throughout their experience. I also think that it may make more sense to introduce the social aspect of vaping in your first case study, ie. social pressure causing a 16 year old to take up vaping, and then delve into the physical side effects later in your chapter. This may also ease the reader into your topic rather than hitting them straight away with medical language and symptoms that have not been explained to them yet. Well done so far! --U3236447 (discusscontribs) 08:40, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Topic development feedback

edit

The topic development submission has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is below, plus see the general feedback page. Please also check the page history for changes made whilst reviewing the chapter plan. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Marks are available via UCLearn. Marks are based on the latest version before the due date.

  1. The title and/or sub-title were not correctly worded and/or formatted. This has been corrected.
  2. User name removed – authorship is as per the list of topics and the page's editing history
  1. Promising 2-level heading structure – could benefit from further development by expanding the structure
  2. Remove the section about physical and mental health implications because it does not fit with the topic (see the sub-title). Instead, consider looking at ways of reducing e-cigarette motivation.
  3. Consider integrating theories earlier (rather than leaving until the end)
  4. Currently heading levels 2 and 5 are used; change this to level 2 and 3
  5. Good alignment between focus questions and heading structure
  6. The Overview and Conclusion should not have sub-headings (fixed)
  7. Avoid having sections with only 1 sub-heading – use 0 or 2+ sub-headings (fixed)
  8. Case study doesn't need a separate heading; instead embed case study within relevant sections (fixed)
  1. Excellent - Scenario, image, evocative description of the problem/topic, relevant psychological theory/research, and focus questions
  2. A scenario or case study is presented in a feature box at the start of this section
  3. The scenario appears to be medically rather than psychologically/motivationally oriented - suggest revising
  4. Tailor brief, evocative description of the problem/topic to the motivational context
  5. Focus questions could be improved
  6. Consider unpacking the first question into some sub-questions
  7. 2nd question not relevant to the topic
  8. Consider adding a question about how motivation can be reduced
  1. Promising development of key points for each section, with relevant citations
  2. Links to citations should be in the reference list instead of the main list. Provide the dois as hyperlinks in the reference list.
  3. Currently the key points reflect the focus questions (good) but the focus questions should be refined to better address the question
  4. Strive for an integrated balance of the best psychological theory and research about this topic, with practical examples
  5. Conclusion (the most important section):
    1. Hasn't been developed
    2. What might the take-home, practical messages be? (What are the answer(s) to the question(s) in the sub-title and/or focus questions?)
  1. A relevant figure is presented, captioned, and cited
  2. Figure(s) are cited at least once in the main text
  1. Include in-text interwiki links for the first mention of key terms to relevant Wikipedia articles and/or to other relevant book chapters
  2. Promising use of example(s)/case study(ies) but the example(s) should be used to illustrate key points
  3. Consider including more examples/case studies, quiz question(s), table(s) etc.
  1. Very good
  2. Well done on identifying relevant systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses
  3. For APA referencing style, check and correct:
    1. capitalisation
    2. italicisation
    3. doi formatting
    4. page numbers should be separated by an en-dash (–) rather than a hyphen (-)
  1. See also
    1. One of two links provided
    2. Move external links to the external link section
    3. Use bullet-points (see Tutorial 02)
    4. Use sentence casing
    5. Include source in brackets after link
    6. Include "(Book chapter, year)" after links to other motivation and emotion book chapters on Wikiversity
    7. Also link to relevant Wikipedia pages
  2. External links
    1. Not developed
  1. Created – minimal, but sufficient
  2. Very brief description about self – consider expanding
  3. Consider linking to your eportfolio page and/or any other professional online profile or resume such as LinkedIn. This is not required, but it can be useful to interlink your professional networks.
  4. Add link to book chapter
  1. No direct link(s) to evidence. This was explained in Tutorial 03. Looking ahead to the book chapter submission, see social contributions.
  2. Use a numbered list per Tutorial 02

Theory of Planned Behaviour

edit

If your study Social Psychology this semester, it might be interesting to incorporate the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). I work in a primary school and majority of the kids that talk about vaping come from a low socio-economic status and with a parent(s) that also engage in the behaviour Annabelle Taylor (discusscontribs) 00:54, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Editing suggestion

edit

Great chapter so far! Using shorter sentences/ mixing in a variety of sentence lengths makes it easier for the reader. Also adding sentences that link the studies to your focus questions/ wrap up the paragraph may make it even more interesting and cohesive. It could also be worth researching about behavioural therapy interventions/ overcoming addiction and neuropsychology if you are interested in those areas and haven't already. Good luck with finalising your chapter! U3229132 (discusscontribs) 05:23, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Overall

edit
  1. Overall, this is a reasonably good chapter. It makes good use of psychological theory and research to address a real-world phenomenon or problem.
  2. Basic use of academic, peer-reviewed citations to support claims
  3. Better use could be made of academic, peer-reviewed citations by using APA style (i.e., remove the embedded links from the main text and provide APA style references in the References section with active doi links)
  4. Move embedded external links into the References section as dois and provide APA style citations
  5. Move non-peer reviewed links into the External links section
  6. Under the maximum word count, so there is room to expand
  7. For additional feedback, see the following comments and these copyedits
  1. Solid
  2. Engages reader via a case study or scenario in a feature box with a relevant image
  3. Explains the problem or phenomenon
  4. Basic focus questions
  5. The second question isn't directly relevant to the topic (see the sub-title)
  1. A very good range of relevant theories are selected, described, and explained
  2. The chapter coverages too much about effects of vaping rather than focusing on the motivational causes of initiation and maintenance
  3. Builds reasonably well on related chapters and/or Wikipedia articles
  4. Reasonably good depth is provided about relevant theory(ies)
  5. Use tables, figures, and/or lists to help convey key theoretical information
  6. Basic use of examples to illustrate theoretical concepts
  7. Consider using more examples to illustrate theoretical concepts
  1. Reasonably good review of relevant research
  2. More detail about key studies would be ideal
  3. Any systematic reviews or meta-analyses in this area?
  4. Insufficient critical thinking about relevant research is evident
  5. Critical thinking about research could be further evidenced by:
    1. describing the methodology (e.g., sample, measures) in important studies
    2. discussing the direction of relationships
    3. considering the strength of relationships
    4. acknowledging limitations
    5. pointing out critiques/counterarguments
    6. suggesting specific directions for future research

    1. Overall, the quality of written expression is good
    2. The target audience is international, not domestic. Only 0.3% of the world human population lives in Australia.
  2. Layout
    1. Include an introductory paragraph before branching into the sub-sections (see [Provide more detail] tags)
    2. Abbreviations
      1. Only create abbreviations where those terms are subsequently re-used
  3. APA style
    1. Use sentence casing for the names of disorders, therapies, theories, etc.
    2. Figures
      1. Briefly captioned; provide more detail to help connect the figure to the text

      3. Refer to each Figure at least once within the main text (e.g., see Figure 1)
    3. Citations use basic APA style (7th ed.). To improve:
      1. Use ampersand (&) inside parentheses and "and" outside parentheses
    4. References use basic APA style:
      1. Check and correct use of capitalisation[1]
      2. Check and correct use of italicisation
      3. Separate page numbers using an en-dash (–) rather than a hyphen (-)
      4. Include hyperlinked dois
  1. Basic use of learning features
  2. Use interwiki links (rather than external links) to Wikipedia articles and Wikiversity book chapters as per Tutorial 2
