Talk:Motivation and emotion/Book/2020/Indigenous Australian psychologist motivation

Comments

edit

Perhaps adding a section to discuss motivation that stems from wanting to benefit/improve the community would be beneficial. It could help flesh out your article in an opposing way from most of your themes while still keeping the collectivist culture point you described! --U3187741 (discusscontribs) 12:10, 29 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion on content

edit

Great topic. It would be interesting to see examples of successful incorporation of culturally relevant and sensitive approaches in the field of psychology in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Maybe the Australian Indigenous Psychology Association may be able to provide this http:/ /www.indigenouspsychology.com.au/. And what about the need to provide psychological services in Language?--Hill Sarah Louise (discusscontribs) 01:58, 30 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Great topic and very interesting, however double check you APA formatting. References need to be indented. -- u3201457 --Claireebousfield (discusscontribs) 15:13, 20 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Heading casing

edit

FYI, the convention on Wikiversity is for sentence casing. For example, the wikitext should be:

== Cats and mice ==

rather than

== Cats and Mice ==

Title and sub-title

edit
  1. Excellent

User page

edit
  1. Excellent
  2. Consider linking to your eportfolio page and/or any other professional online profile such as LinkedIn. This is not required, but it can be useful to interlink your professional networks.

Social contribution

edit
  1. None summarised with link(s) to evidence.

Section headings

edit
  1. Reasonably useful headings, but also room for development. As more specific resources are identified, shaped the heading to focus on less general content and more theory and research actually about the journeys for Indigenous Australians to become psychologists.
  2. Consider rewording "How to motivate Indigenous Australians to become psychologists" to something that better communicates a more intrinsically empowering message. Also consider the limitations of the I-E framework (e.g., it is individualist; can there be socicultural motivation?).
  3. See earlier comment about Heading casing.

Key points

edit
  1. A good job has been done to map mainstream motivation theory to a specific topic. This will be a challenging topic because of a lack of specific theory and research, however work in this area is growing rapidly and it will be important, therefore, where possible, to use and build on existing work by and about Australian Indigenous psychologist training and employment. In that respect, some useful starting points and external links are:
  2. Overview - Consider adding:
    1. a description of the problem and what will be covered
    2. an image
    3. an example or case study
  3. Basic development of key points for each section, with relevant citations.
  4. Include in-text interwiki links for the first mention of key terms to relevant Wikipedia articles and/or to other relevant book chapters.
  5. Consider including more examples/case studies.
  6. Direct quotes need page numbers (APA style) - even better, write in your own words.
  7. Conclusion (the most important section):
    1. hasn't been developed
    2. what might the take-home, practical messages be?

Image

edit
  1. Excellent
  2. An image (figure) is presented.
  3. Caption
    1. uses APA style.
    2. could better explain how the image connects to key points being made in the main text.
  4. Cite each figure at least once in the main text.
  5. Consider decreasing image size from default to make it easier to view.

References

edit
  1. Needs work in terms of selection and formatting
  2. Shift non-peer-reviewed sources to the external links section
  3. Go beyond textbook to primary sources
  4. For APA referencing style, check and correct:
    1. capitalisation
    2. doi formatting

Resources

edit
  1. See also
    1. Also link to relevant book chapters - e.g., see w:Category:Motivation and emotion/Book/Indigenous/Australian
  2. External links
    1. Include source in brackets after link

Suggestion

edit

Hello. I hope you don't mind. I made some changes to your 'Why does society need more Indigenous Australian people to become psychologists?' section. There were a lot of repeated words and long sentences. I like the topic you have chosen. Just in this section, you could talk about less westernised ways of a First Nations person becoming a psychologist. Or perhaps how cultural practises could be absorbed and applied in a First Nations psychology consultation. Thanks, it was a lovely read.

Overall

edit
  1. Overall, this is a very good chapter that successfully uses psychological theory and research to help address a practical, real-world phenomenon or problem, particularly given the limited existing material in this area.
  1. For additional feedback, see the following comments and these copyedits.
  1. Relevant theories are well selected, described, integrated, and explained.
  2. I'm a little wary of the emphasis on extrinsic rather than intrinsic motivation, especially given the colonial/historical use of extrinsic motivators, but use of the I-E taxonomy in the example is excellent.
  3. Perhaps some psychological literature about work motivation and motivation to become a psychologist could be incorporated.
  4. One or more case studies could be helpful.
  1. Relevant research is well reviewed and discussed in relation to theory.
  2. Some clearer statistics about: (a) the gap in mental health; (b) the gap in psychologists between Indigenous- and non-Indigenous Australians would be useful.
  3. When describing important research findings, consider including a bit more detail about the methodology and indicating the size of effects in addition to whether or not there was an effect or relationship.
  1. Written expression
    1. Overall, the quality of written expression is excellent.
    2. The chapter benefited from a well developed Overview and Conclusion, with clear focus question(s) and take-home messages.
  2. Layout
    1. The chapter is well structured, with major sections using sub-sections.
    2. Avoid having sections with 1 sub-heading - use 0 or 2+ sub-headings.
    3. Remove citations from headings.
  3. Learning features
    1. Basic of embedded in-text interwiki links to Wikipedia articles. Adding more interwiki links for the first mention of key words and technical concepts would make the text more interactive.
    2. No use of embedded in-text links to related book chapters. Embedding in-text links to related book chapters helps to integrate this chapter into the broader book project.
    3. Excellent use of image(s). Ideally, include more Australian Aboriginal culture images.
    4. Basic use of table(s) - APA style caption needed.
    5. Basic use of feature box(es).
    6. Excellent use of quiz(zes).
  4. Grammar, spelling, and proofreading are excellent.
  5. APA style
    1. Citations use correct APA style.
    2. Citations are not in full APA style. For example:
      1. If there are three or more authors, cite the first author followed by et al., then year. For example, either:
        1. in-text, Smith et al. (2020), or
        2. in parentheses (Smith et al., 2020)
      2. Use ampersand (&) inside brackets and "and" outside brackets.
      3. Multiple citations in parentheses should be listed in alphabetical order by first author surname.
      4. Do not include author initials.
      5. A full stop is needed after "et al" (i.e., "et al.").
      6. Citations in parentheses should use a comma between the author(s) and year.
      7. Select up to a maximum of three citations per point (i.e., avoid citing four or more citations to support a single point).
    3. References are not in full APA style. For example:
      1. Check and correct use of capitalisation.
      2. Check and correct use of italicisation.
      3. Include hyperlinked dois.
  1. ~1 logged, useful, social contributions with direct links to evidence

Suggestion for quiz position

edit

Hi there, I loved your book chapter, however, I think the location of the quiz should be moved to another area. I found the answers were right above the quiz and could defeat the purpose of it. U3185242 (discusscontribs) 15:38, 6 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
