Questions and Notes

1. Lilias Borthwick was the only daughter of Algernon and Alice Lister Borthwick, sister of Oliver Borthwick, proprietors and editors of the London Morning Post. Her brother predeceased their father, so the Morning Post went to her; she and her husband then owned and edited it until they sold it in 1924.
2. Lilias Bathurst is not listed has having attended the Duchess of Devonshire's ball, although her husband, parents and brother were there. A child was not born to her in 1897 as far as I can tell, although we may not be able to know about a miscarriage. Perhaps she was present and not reported on.
3. According to the Morning Post and the Gentlewoman, the Knights of the Round Table were George, Baron Rodney; Hon. R. Grosvenor; Seymour Henry Bathurst, 7th Earl Bathurst; and Hon. Grosvenor Hood. According to the Daily News, the Knights of the Table Round were "Lord Ashburton, Lord Rodney, Lord Bathurst, Lord Ampthill, and Lord Beauchamp." George, Baron Rodney was 40 at the time of the ball; Seymour Henry Bathurst, 7th Earl Bathurst was nearly 33; Hon. Grosvenor Hood was 29;  Lord Francis Ashburton was nearly 31; Lord Ampthill was 28; Lord Beauchamp was 25.
4. Mr. B. Bathurst is identifiable as Allen Benjamin Bathurst because Mr. B. Bathurst at that time was M.P. from East Gloucestershire (hence the Mr.) and, according to a report on a funeral, the Earl's brother.
