1870 April 5, Alice Beatrice Lister and Algernon Borthwick married.[2]

1893 November 15, Lilias Borthwick and Seymour Henry Bathurst married at St. Paul's, Knightsbridge, London.[3]

1895 November 16,[4] David Cannadine says, "In 1895 the first press baron was created, when Algernon Borthwick became Lord Glenesk."[5]:200

1897 July 2, Friday, Algernon and Alice Borthwick and Oliver Borthwick attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball at Devonshire House; also attending was their son-in-law, Henry Bathurst, 7th Earl of Bathurst, but Lilias Borthwick Bathurst is not mentioned by any of the newspaper as having attended, but she may not have been seen or recognized. (Algernon Borthwick is #87, on the list of people who attended; Alice Borthwick is #88; Oliver Borthwick is #89.)

Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball edit

Alice Borthwick, Lady Glenesk edit

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Alice Borthwick, Lady Glenesk was dressed

  • as "a Greek."[6]:p. 5, Col. 7c
  • as "Egeria."[7]:p. 8, Col. 1b; 7, Col. 4c [8]:Col. 2c
  • in a "Greek Classical Costume, Long tunic crépe de chine mauve rose, the border of which is very handsomely embroidered with gold studded amethysts. Manteau drapery of mauve seutenu crépe de chine; border embroidered gold and studded turquoises. Crown, gold laurels."[9]:p. 2, Col. 7a
  • in a "(Greek classical costume), long tunic crêpe de Chine mauve rose, embroidered with gold, studded amethysts; manteau / drapery of mauve soutenu crêpe de Chine; border broidered gold and studded turquoises."[10]:p. 40, Col. 3a–3c

Robert Faulkner & Co.'s portrait (above right) of "Alice Beatrice (née Lister), Lady Glenesk as Egeria" in costume is photogravure #67 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[11] The printing on the portrait says, "Lady Glenesk as Egeria."[12]

Algernon Borthwick, Baron Glenesk edit

Algernon Borthwick, Baron Glenesk was dressed as Lord James Murray in the Queen Elizabeth procession.[7]:p. 8, Col. 1b; p. 7, Col. 4c [8]:Col. 2c The Gentlewoman says, "Lord Glenesk" followed in the wake of Lady Edmonstone's Mary Queen of Scots.[10]:p. 34, Col. 1a Robert Faulkner & Co.'s portrait of "Algernon Borthwick, 1st Baron Glenesk as Lord James Murray" in costume is photogravure #68 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[11] The printing on the portrait says, "Lord Glenesk as Lord James Murray."[13]

Borthwick appears to be wearing some kind of honors insignia in his photograph. If the right Lord James Murray is dressed as James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl (28 September 1690 – 8 January 1764), then Borthwick was dressed as a Scot who joined the Duke of Cumberland's army, fighting on the side of the British in the Jacobite uprising.[14]

Oliver Borthwick edit

Oliver Borthwick (at 89) was dressed as "Marshal Turenne"[7]:p. 8, Col. 1b [8]:Col. 2c or an "officier d'lnfanterie."[10]:p. 40, Col. 2a
