Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball

edit

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, the Hon. G. Hood — Grosvenor Hood, later 5th Viscount Hood of Whitley — attended the ball dressed as a Knight of the Round Table,[8]:p. 8, Col. 1b or specifically as Sir Galahad. Along with the other knights, he wore a

  • "white satin tabard, royal blue cloak embroidered in scarlet and gold over chain mail armour, with helmet, spurs, and two-handed sword complete, each with his own crest embroidered on his tabard."[9]:p. 5, Col. 7a
  • "chain armour, white tabards richly broidered, crested helmets, and velvet mantles, [with] Lord Ashburton, Earl Rodney, Earl Bathurst, [and] Sir Lister Kaye."[10]:41, Col. 2b

Lafayette's portrait of "Grosvenor Arthur Alexander Hood, 5th Viscount Hood as Sir Galahad" in costume is photogravure #150 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[11] The printing on the portrait says, "The Hon. Grosvenor Hood as Sir Galahad."[12]

The heraldic-looking bird on Hood's tabard does not appear to be part of the Arms of his title.
