Social Victorians/People/Armed Forces Invited
Members of the Armed Forces Invited to Royal Social Events
editThis complex group of people is part of a much larger group of people invited to and attending social events, especially those hosted by the Prince and Princess of Wales, in London at the end of the 19th century.
They are made up of the sons of aristocrats, some of whom will eventually inherit a title, as well as members of military organizations who were invited to an event for some particular reason. Individuals might appear in the rankings anywhere, depending on the social position of their families; sometimes they appear in the rankings if their place is known or they appear that way in the newspaper reports. When they are present as members of the military in the newspaper reports, they are typically listed before the "misters" in descending order by military rank, with the army appearing before the navy. Further complicating this list, which is ahistorical in the sense that it comes from a number of lists made in different years, is the fact that individuals will have risen through the ranks over time.
People's rank in this listing is their rank at the time of the event, as reported in newspapers. So the same individual may be in several places, at different ranks, having attended different events over time.
