Sir William Temple, 1st Baronet (25 April 1628 – 27 January 1699) was a diplomat and statesman; Jonathan Swift was his secretary for the last ten years Sir William Temple's life.[15]

Maria Chaine, called Mrs. Maria Chaine, went as Mme. Sans-Gêne, with a "costume as that worn by Ellen Terry."[11]:p. 36, Col. 2b

Henry Van der Weyde's portrait (left) of "Maria Henrietta Sophia Chaine (née Phipps) as Madame Sans Gêne" in costume is photogravure #155 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[13] The printing on the portrait says, "Mrs. Chaine as Madame Sans Gêne."[16]

  • The Queen says, "Mrs Chaine appeared as Madame Sans-Gêne, in a white Empire gown, embroidered in turquoise, silver, and diamonds."[17]

Madame Sans Gêne, written by Victorien Sardou and Émile Moreau and first performed in Paris in 1893, played at the Lyceum in April 1897, with Henry Irving as Napoleon and Ellen Terry as Catherine Hübscher, translation by J. Comyns Carr.[18]
