Wikiversity nominated for award
Hi all,
My name is Matthew Roth, Global Comms Manager at the Wikimedia Foundation. We just got the following notice in through the press queue on OTRS. I'm not familiar with the publication or the award, but assuming it's legitimate, I'm putting the info here. I hope this is the best place to post. Please let me know if not. I also apologize if this appears to be spam or is not useful. If that is the case, please feel free to close this discussion or delete post haste. Thanks! Proposal: School of Creativity
I have posted some content, and done a very small amount of exploring the (very large) Wikiversity.
I am reluctant to start the School of Creativity all by myself, because I know so little about "how to do it best". But the topic is notable, important, relevant, and necessary -- and also very interdisciplinary!
As I am trying to imagine it, the School of Creativity should be able to support
- Curricula (interdisciplinary links to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Not necessarily in that order,
but "STEAM" makes a nice acronym.)
- Courses (for example: Visualization development, Brainstorming, Interplay between Convergent and Divergent Thinking, Lateral Thinking, Problem Solving, Creativity in the Arts, Creativity in the Sciences, Creativity in the Crafts, Great Thinkers and Their Innovations)
- Lessons (for example, How to Find Your Very Own Personal Solution for Rubik's Cube, How to do Computer Programming in BASIC, Introduction to Machine Theory, Creativity in Twentieth Century Mathematics, etc.)
- Essays, Articles, Reading lists, Activities
Content is available in the Wikiversity and in its sister Wiki projects. But even more essential than content is the organization of that content so that students can easily find pathways to learning whatever they desire to learn. For example, I learned more about the C++ computer language in two days, by reading a book by Bjarne Stroustrup, its inventer, than I did in two years, trying to wade through 2 gigabytes of inadequately organized (but still important and useful nonetheless) documentation which came with the compiler.
<source lang="matlab"> doesn't properly work
Hi, since a while there is a problem with displaying Matlab calculations. Here you can see some Matlab code in the gray box. But if you look at the source you can see that most of the calculation is not shown. This is something new. The calculations in the gray boxes on the bottom of this section (example function ...) are not shown at all. When I created the page of course they were. Proposal: School of Latin American and Chicano Studies
Is there any interest in a School of Latin American and Chicano studies? It would be interdisciplinary in nature, covering both cultural, social, and political aspects of the region. Davidgolding (talk) 20:16, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
Student Union
Please have a look at this proposal for a Student Union. Leutha (talk) 09:24, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- I generally agree with the concept of a Student Union. However, I have some serious concerns with the approach and tone being expressed on this page overall.
- "How this problem [of a Student Union] should be addressed is hereby a challenge for Computer Science students. They should build a student union for Wikiversity as part of their learning experience here at Wikiversity." Building additional resources is good, so why limit it? --Marshallsumter (talk) 22:28, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for those comments. I must admit I also agree that it would be useful to have a clearer idea of what people mean by "leaders"? Leutha (talk) 00:15, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Left some feedback at the talk page, ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat + Identi.ca 01:52, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
- Perhaps I should transfer my comments to the talk page for Leaders. --Marshallsumter (talk) 18:58, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- Some comments moved. --Marshallsumter (talk) 14:01, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
