editAlthough I am not an active content contributor to this wiki, I have sysop on mediawiki.org (a WMF project) and actively do counter-vandalism work for meta:SWMT. This wiki is a frequent target of spammers and it would be better for me if I could just delete spam instead of having to tag it and wait for an existing custodian to "mop up."--Jasper Deng (talk|meta) 03:28, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Questions
edit- I appreciate your enthusiasm and have seen the good work you already do here. However, as an admin on Wikiquote as well as a custodian here I am well aware of how much WMF sites differ. How will you adapt what you know from mediawiki to this site?--Collingwood (talk) 11:26, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- This site will have much more student editing and it will be not about the software itself, and as the project name suggests, this project hosts pages on topics that are designed to educate the reader, as opposed to Wikipedia articles which might describe but not explain something like Galois theory. Also, less pages are eligible for speedy deletion; while on MediaWiki.org user pages like "I am a professor at University ABC" are deleted as out-of-scope, here only blatant copyright violations, spam, vandalism, non-educational pages and the like in general are eligible for speedy deletion. On MediaWiki.org we often block immediately for the creation of such pages, but here I intend to reserve that only for blatant spambots that I know on other wikis. What will remain the same is my knowledge of IP address rangeblocks and proxy blocking. This project accepts non-free files so I will not do my usual deletions of such files on this wiki as I do on MediaWiki.org except for files without valid fair-use rationales.--Jasper Deng (talk|meta) 16:32, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Comments
edit- Thanks for helping out with managing spam/vandalism, Jasper Deng. Your response above and edits so far are encouraging. However, I would like to see a longer editing history and although its not required for custodianship, I encourage you to become involved in some learning projects of interest on en.wv. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 00:43, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for the comment and advice. I will say that although I'm not an expert, pages like covalent bonding need work.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:23, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Jasper Deng has a lot more experience over all than many candidates for Custodianship here, and he has a long record on the project compared to most who become custodians here. I think it is necessary for him to be granted temporary custodianship then promoted after the month is up. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:41, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- With great regret, I reluctantly agree with Jtneil. A custodian as diligent as Jasper would be very useful, but it would be highly advisable for him to withdraw this, edit here for a bit longer and then re-submit. I would be delighted to assist him in this process, for example by discussing use of the delete tag.--Collingwood (talk) 12:09, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Fair enough. I hereby withdraw this request for now. When I'll request again depends on the amount of time I find to work on content here.--Jasper Deng (talk) 14:20, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Jasper there is already one custodian willing to mentor. That means right now you can officially be granted temporary custodianship. You only need one person willing to mentor you. Ottava Rima (talk) 04:15, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, the fact that I did not know of that seems to prove Collingwood's and Jtneill's comments about experience...--Jasper Deng (talk) 14:30, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- This candidacy has been withdrawn, but it could be re-opened. I recall noticing a problem with a Jasper Deng contribution, but also many good signs. If this is re-opened, I'd look back and see what I noticed and ask about it. Generically, the most common issues would involve expectations and attitudes brought here from other WMF sites where operating procedures and traditions are very different. Wikiversity tends to be radically inclusive, we find ways to include fringe science or even pseudoscience, without being misleading. Wikiversity is, in some ways, like a university environment, where there can be classes on some very weird things, and where students can explore stuff that is even too weird to be in the university catalog! We have a user who began here at about eight years of age, and who was writing stuff that was advanced. For eight years of age! There were attempts to define him as a vandal and even to globally ban him. But he was learning! And he responded to care and consideration -- and insistence that his fantasies be confined to his user space! Again, our goal is Progressive education, for all ages, not necessarily "approved content," and we are definitely not an encyclopedia.
- Having said that, I'll note that Ottava is correct. It is entirely up to a mentor whether or not to approve a candidacy for probationary custodianship, by taking responsibility for supervising it. The discussion here is irrelevant for that purpose. The probationary custodianship should have been granted, if a 'crat was willing to do it. Jtneill did not actually express unwillingness, just an opinion about what would be better. --Abd (discuss • contribs) 16:17, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
