Discussion edit

The aesthetic need & the need to know and understand

From a travel standpoint it has often been suggested that these needs, while less known, carry more weight then the hierarchical needs model in relation to explaining travel motivation, what are your thoughts?

I really like the book chapter, i dont have a great deal of technical advise, but would you consider using the wikiversity quiz in the chapter as opposed to the link?

Feedback edit

Feel free to add any ideas about my book chapter here:

Hopefully this is how we are supposed to use the "discuss" pages (I am still trying to work it all out). So far I really like your book chapter. With the table that you have (Travel Literature Table) I think that adding external links to the theorists page may help with providing more context for people that may know come from a psychology based background. I also really like how you have used the example of "Jenny" and I really think that you could develop that further and integrate it throughout the chapter. I will add any links/articles or references that may be relevant to you here later on. Good Luck! --U3096823 (discusscontribs) 10:34, 22 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi!

You've got such a great start on your chapter! I like the use of diagrams and photos, especially Maslow's hierarchy image, I never thought that that would tie in with travelling, but it works. I like how you've linked to a lot of things for people to click on them and learn more about them too, keep up the good work.

--David James Stevenson (discusscontribs) 01:19, 23 September 2015 (UTC) Hello there. Book chapter looks like it is coming along nicely. Just one thing I noticed is - Your social contributions are to go in your 'my discussion' section. Under a forum called eg. social contributions. otherwise they will appear in your word count. If you are unsure of what I mean you can either look at my discussion page or send me a msg and I will explain further. All the best.Reply

The research you have done so far looks great and has given you a great start, I think it is important to focus on a smooth chapter making sure that each section links to the next and so on. The use of pictures and tables looks great and makes your chapter more inviting to read, keep up the fantastic research and it is going to be a very interesting topicU3097561 (discusscontribs) 11:39, 23 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Your book chapter looks extremely good so far. All of the charts are neatly organized and youve placed them strategically within your chapter. I really like the quiz you have at the bottom, its a good idea because it allows the readers to get further information on your topic. Good job :) --Uu3148421 (discusscontribs) 4:18, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, I think you've made a great start on your chapter and the topic is very interesting. I like the diagrams and pictures you have included so far and the example of Jenny makes it a great way to apply it to real life. The theories you've discussed so far are easy to understand. I'm not sure if you've already researched this but have you read about the effects of nationality, age and gender on travel motivation? If not, here is an article from 2008 discussing the impact of these factors on people travelling to Barbados http://www.tandfonline.com.ezproxy.canberra.edu.au/doi/pdf/10.1080/10548400802508499 and here is another article from 2008 about a study based on gender differences on travel motivation, values and attributes http://content.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.canberra.edu.au/ContentServer.asp?T=P&P=AN&K=34230574&S=R&D=bth&EbscoContent=dGJyMNXb4kSeqa440dvuOLCmr02eprVSs6m4SbCWxWXS&ContentCustomer=dGJyMPGptFC3qLNMuePfgeyx44Dt6fIA --U3046579 (discusscontribs) 12:01, 30 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, just read your chapter good job! It is really well set out and very informative. In your conclusion you summarised the reasons for the chapter and made some great suggestions for future chapters. Perhaps add into the conclusion a summary of the reasons why people travel more now compared with earlier times just to reiterate the point. Good luck! ---u3079526 - Rhiannon Simpson---

Hello! I just read your book chapter and i think its excellent. One additional thought which i feel may benefit you is also incorporating the drive theory to help explain travel motivation. the [w:Drive theory|Drive theory]] basically just talks about how people are motivated to take action and do something because they are feeling a negative amount of tension and want to restore their harmony. Anyway, just an idea and i hope it helps! Goodluck and i am looking forward to reading this! --U3034876 (discusscontribs) 01:01, 20 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hey, you chapter is looking very good, i especially like the quiz you incorporated in the first image, it really got me interested at the start of the chapter to keep reading. Good job !

This chapter has been reviewed according to the marking criteria. Written feedback is provided below, plus there is a general feedback page. Please also check the chapter's page history to check for editing changes made whilst reviewing through the chapter. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below and/or contacting the reviewer. Chapter marks will be available later via Moodle, along with social contribution marks and feedback. Keep an eye on Announcements.

Overall edit

  1. Overall, this was a promising chapter with rich coverage of relevant theory, but lacking somewhat in integration and critical review of research and also in some of the quality of written expression. The chapter embraced the interactive wiki environment, with the quiz being a particular highlight. For more feedback see these copyedits and the comments below.

Theory edit

  1. Theory is well covered and explained.

Research edit

  1. A critical review of related research is somewhat lacking.
  2. When describing important research studies, provide some indication of the nature of the sample and possibly cultural context, and indicate the size of effects in addition to whether or not there was an effect or relationship.

Written expression edit

  1. Written expression
    1. The quality of written expression could be improved (e.g., where clarification templates have been added to the page).
    2. Avoid directional referencing (e.g., above, below, as previously mentioned)
  2. Layout
    1. Tables and/or Figures were used effectively. However, licensing information has not been provided for the uploaded images - this is needed ASAP, otherwise the images will be deleted.
  3. Learning features
    1. The quiz works very well   - could use imagemap to link the picture directly to the quiz.
      1. Spelling - existance -> existence
    2. Links to Wikipedia and/or Wikiversity articles were added as external links - these should be changed to interwiki links
  4. Spelling
    1. Use Australian spelling (e.g., hypothesize -> hypothesise)
    2. Spelling could be improved to be closer to professional standard - see my copyedits
  5. Grammar and proofreading
    1. The grammar of some sentences needs to be improved for the written expression to be of professional standard (e.g., see the [grammar?] tags)
    2. Check and correct the use/non-use of ownership apostrophes.
  6. APA style
    1. Put in-text citations in alphabetical order.
    2. The reference list is not in full APA style.

Written feedback is provided below, plus see the general feedback page. Responses to this feedback can be made by starting a new section below. If you would like further clarification about the marking or feedback, contact the unit convener.

Overall edit

  1. Overall, this is well prepared and executed presentation.

Structure and content edit

  1. Theory was well covered - perhaps not all theories needed to be covered or in as much detail though - e.g., to allow some consideration of research.
  2. Perhaps consider using more illustrative examples.
  3. Push/pull slide could separate the motivations into the separate categories.
  4. A conclusion slide summarising the take-home messages could be helpful.

Communication edit

  1. Well-paced.
  2. Perhaps consider using greater intonation.

Production quality edit

  1. Picture quality could be improved by reducing border/background size and zooming in on diagram etc. of interest - some diagrams were very difficult to read and contained too much information (e.g., TCL)
  2. Overall, well produced.
