Talk:Motivation and emotion/Book/2014/Healing and emotion

Interesting read

edit

Hi - I am rather intrigued by your chapter given the focus on positive mind = good health these days. I know my parents always drummed this into me when I was a child and still do but I often wondered whether it really was true. After reading your chapter I recognise that there is some truth behind it. I can see that the chapter isn't complete but I think it is a fantastic start. In terms of theories, I wonder whether the self-determination theory might be a good one for this, focussing on intrinsic motivation (internal emotions being the focus) whereas external emotions may differ to how the person is truly feeling inside about their health issue. I wonder is people act as if they are positive to make others feel better about what they are going through rather than feel sorry for them. Pity may be another aspect to look into, whether other people's behaviour/emotional reaction to people suffering from serious health issues e.g. cancer has positive or negative impacts on the person suffering from illness (my guess is pity would have a negative effect). I noticed some grammar errors throughout (fullstops missing etc) but realise this is in draft form, but just wanted to highlight that in case you missed it. Overall, a great topic and I am sure many people will be interested to read the final result. Thanks :) U3030139 (discusscontribs) 10:45, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

APA style captions for images and tables

edit

I recommend using APA style captions i.e., Figure 1, Figure 2 etc. for all images, graphs etc. and Table 1, Table 2 etc. for all tables. The caption text should not be in italics. Feedback

edit

Hi! Really enjoyed reading your chapter- I found it interesting, easy to read and I think the content flows really well.. I'm wondering if it would we possible to further link your 'emotional states' information and your content on self-determination theory, placebo effect etc. My only feedback would be linking them more so that your theory, research and practical examples are all connected. Looking forward to seeing your finished chapter!--U3068695 (discusscontribs) 01:32, 25 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

(More) Feedback

edit

Hey! This is an interesting topic and I think you've covered it really well. I especially like the table of emotions that can be experienced during illness and the way you've explained them makes them very clear. You give a really good baseline for then talking about how those emotions effect treatment. I saw that you were editing the page as I was reading, so I didn't want to interrupt by making any spelling/grammar edits. My only suggestion would be to maybe provide a picture/graph of some kind when your talking about neuropeptides and their receptors. Even just a simple chart to show the systems working together. The chapter's looking good! U3068280 (discusscontribs) 04:45, 25 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

APA caption

edit

Hi, I have just made small changes to you figure captions. I think what is expected of us is: Figure 1. and then caption text.--Xlc (discusscontribs) 06:26, 25 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Few changes

edit

Hi, I hope you don't mind but I have made a couple of small changes - just a space here and there and changing an 's', and correcting some capitals in your title (you don't realise how much that has become habit!).

Also, I think doctor-patient relationship may need a hyphen - I wasn't 100% sure so I didn't change it.

The only other thought I had was that there may be some videos you could attach in external links relating to a number of the concepts you've raised.

Your page is looking good, the information is well laid out and easy to read. While I really like the colours you've used I'd be wary of using too much colour. I'm pretty sure James warned against this in a Moodle post.

Well done!

Overall

A very good presentation on an interesting topic. Congratulations!

The structure is very clear, with a logical flow between ideas. Opening with the case study was great - very engaging. Referring back to it at the end was a very fitting conclusion. Theory and research are well integrated throughout.

The voice-over is well paced, with good intonation and pauses between sentences and slides. The slides are very nicely put together, with legible text and interesting colours. Some text is too small (down the bottom of slides, next to the light bulb). The inclusion of some more images or figures could be an area for improvement.

Basic production tools are used well. The use of Prezi gives a professional feel. Audio quality is very good. The visuals are also clear. A link back to the book chapter is provided.

Overall

edit
  1. Overall, this chapter provides some basic insight into psychological theory and research about healing and emotions, but lacks coherent connection between various theories, a systematic review of research, and the written expression is untidy. For more feedback, see these copyedits and comments below.
  1. Theory seems to be somewhat ad hoc.
  2. The Overview could be revised to explain what theories are to be covered and why.
  1. The Reeve (2009) textbook is over-used as a citation; consult and cite primary, peer-reviewed sources
  2. When describing important research findings, indicate the size of effects in addition to whether or not there was an effect or relationship.
  3. Some statements were unreferenced - see the [factual?] tags
  4. The chapter seems to be somewhat adhoc in its selection of research and should become more systematic in its review of relevant research (e.g., no meta-analyses are covered - e.g., http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S019188691000276X)
  1. Written expression
    1. Some paragraphs are overly long. Each paragraph should communicate one key idea in three to five sentences.
    2. The quality of written expression could be improved (e.g., where clarification templates have been added to the page).
    3. Direct quotes are overused.
    4. Add more linking sentences between sections.
    5. The Conclusion should ideally provide some more concrete take-home messages.
  2. Layout
    1. Include an APA style caption for the Table.
  3. Learning features
    1. Some links to Wikipedia and/or Wikiversity articles were added as external links - these should be changed to interwiki links
    2. Link to the book chapters on anger and fear.
  4. Spelling
    1. Spelling was poor - see the [spelling?] tags
    2. Use Australian spelling (e.g., hypothesize -> hypothesise)
  5. Grammar and proofreading
    1. Dashes (-) are overused; often they should be replaced with commas
    2. The grammar of some sentences need to be improved (e.g., see the [grammar?] tags)
    3. Check and correct the use of ownership apostrophes (e.g., individuals vs. individual's vs. individuals')
  6. APA style
    1. The reference list is not in full APA style.
    2. Numbers under 10 should be written in words (e.g., five); numbers 10 and over should be written in numbers (e.g., 10)
    3. Put in-text citations in alphabetical order.
    4. Check/correct APA style for in-text citations
    5. et al -> et al.
    6. Direct quotes need page numbers.
    7. Use ampersand (&) inside brackets and "and" outside brackets.
