Talk:Motivation and emotion/Book/2014/Adolescent substance use motivation
Possible references
editHi there, I saw your topic and it made me think of a motivation and emotion tutorial where we were discussing this kind of topic. James mentioned something about how boredom may be a potential factor that might motivate substance abuse. I thought this could be an interesting point to make in your chapter (if it was something along the lines you were thinking of doing) so I've found a couple of articles that might be useful if so. They focus on investigating boredom as a factor contributing to risk behaviour in adolescents. The first one is a South African study but it reviews the literature on this topic so that might also be helpful if you want to do further research. The second one is similar and it identifies 4 out of 15 factors that reflect alcohol use motivations and Cannabis use motivation, they were: Enhance Positive Affect and Creativity, Reduce Negative Affect, Social Cohesion, and Addiction. So if this is something you would like to look into further I've provided the references and linked them to the article :)

edithey, I am interested to read your chapter... in regards to illicit drug use there is a huge amount of info out there on adolescent risk taking and the development of the brain. I recall studying this in physiological psych... The interesting thing would be to consider how this literature impacts the current legislation and minimum age, if at all! For some relevant literature have a look at Wetherill & Tapert (2013) 'Adolescent brain development, substance use, and psychotherapeutic change', and Steinberg (2009) 'Should the science of adolescent brain development inform public policy'. On another note, Smith, Chein & Steinberg (2014) have produced a paper 'peers increase adolescent risk taking even when the probabilities of negative outcomes are known' which might also be worth a brief discussion in your chapter - that is how peer pressure affects illicit drug use. Goodluck!

hi there, i have been recently doing an assignment on drinking behaviors and what can influence teens to drink thought i might add some links of useful journal articles. (http://web.a.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.canberra.edu.au/ehost/detail/detail?vid=5&sid=1ba90004-0dee-424a-94ff-34cf50c1c5fa%40sessionmgr4005&hid=4101&bdata=#db=a9h&AN=69659551) this article talks about how social learning theory can influence drinking behaviours and also about gender and race differences in motivation to drink. (http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/027321790518681#.VER6ivmUfLk) this one talks about binge drinking behaviours and how our peers influence and motivate us to drink. Doing my research the main thing that i found was that peers seemed to have the greatest influence on substance use and that usually adolescents that had peers who used substances, do not follow norms, are angry, risk takers, sensation seeking and low academic achievement were found to drink more. here are some more articles http://web.a.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.canberra.edu.au/ehost/detail/detail?vid=13&sid=1ba90004-0dee-424a-94ff-34cf50c1c5fa%40sessionmgr4005&hid=4101&bdata=

Hi Lucydiamond1008,
I have noticed you haven't started your chapter and i find your topic really interesting so I did some research myself. I often ask myself 'why do teenagers start taking drugs?' So to research this was both beneficial for you and myself!
Here is what i found: Peer Drug Associations and Emotional Restraint: Causes or Consequences of Adolescents' Drug Use?
This article is about a study used to look at the relationship between emotional restraint, peer drug associations and gateway drug use among a sample of 1256 adolescents (Middle school students)
Another article to get you started is called: The Association between Overweight and Illegal Drug Consumption in Adolescents: Is There an Underlying Influence of the Sociocultural Environment?
I found this article very interesting as i didn't, before now, associate drug use with weight, at least not so much with females especially.
This study, like the title suggests, aimed to examine the associate between overweight adolescents and drug use. it was found that drug use is more frequent in overweight and underweight adolescents, especially females.
I hope this helps and is a good starting point to your chapter! I look forward to watching it progress and will check back often and assist when I can. If you are interested, my book chapter is called dehydration and mood. However I am still, like yourself, in research mode and currently do not have information up on my chapter yet. If you are interested or would like to make a contribution to my chapter the link is: https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Motivation_and_emotion/Book/2014/Dehydration_and_mood
Thanks

Heading casing
editFYI, the convention on Wikiversity is for lower-cased headings. For example, use:
==Cats and dogs== |
APA style captions for images and tables
editI recommend using APA style captions i.e., Figure 1, Figure 2 etc. for all images, graphs etc. and Table 1, Table 2 etc. for all tables. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 09:57, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

OveralleditA very informative presentation. Well done! The structure of this presentation is very good, and the flow is logical. A presentation overview and conclusion are provided. Good definitions and statistics are provided, in order to introduce the topic. Research and theory are both very clearly addressed. Communication is good. The slides are generally well developed. Some slides contain too much text, resulting in the text being too small. The voice-over varies between a good pace, and slightly too fast. Adequate expression is used. Appropriate mages are used to support the written content. Basic production tools are used. The use of Prezi gives a professional feel. The audio quality is sufficient. The visuals are clear. Copyright license information is provided. A link back to the chapter is not provided. |
