Possible Link?

edit

Hi there, I was wondering if it would be possible if I linked your chapter to mine? I am doing Bullying and emotion, and there aren't very many that link well with that! But I was thinking that sometimes, especially in schools or with young people, motivation to modify someones body often can be as a result of bullying, or more specifically to avoid bullying. Linking

edit

Hi!! I have gone ahead and popped a link to your page in my book chapter. I am doing motivational contagion and believe that there are many similarities between the two. TomMarvoloRiddle (discusscontribs) 13:31, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Initial comments on proposed topic

edit

Thanks for being bold and adding "Motivation of body image" to the Motivation and Emotion book. My main suggestion is to develop a more specific title, sub-title and focus for the chapter e.g.,

Body modification and motivation - Why do people undergo body modification - What motivates the choice to modify or not modify one's body?

Let me know your thoughts and we can rename the page as necessary.

Thankyou for your feedback

Thankyou for your helpful feedback in regards to the title of the article. Indeed i think renaming it would be the most appropriate option as it distinguishes it from other motivation and body articles and states more clearly the kind of information it will contain.

again thankyou for your feedback.

Great, that sounds good, Belinda. I've renamed the page. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 11:02, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Some extra ideas

edit

Hi there,

I've done a fair bit of research on body modification in the past and have a few extras you could look at: scarification, suspension, neck rings, those discs in the lip, stretching, branding, microdermal and subdermal implants, genital mutiliation. Feel free to ask me about any of them if you want some clarification.

I recently watched a movie called "American Mary" which goes into some more extreme body modification techniques which might be useful for you to watch (it is a little gory so a warning for you there).

Also, have you considered discussing cultural beliefs and also peer pressure in niche groups e.g. goths, emos, punks, etc.

Enjoy! Amyr16 (discusscontribs) 00:35, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Prison & Criminal Tattoos?

edit

A significant part of the phenomenon of body modification - particularly tattoos. In the Americas and Russia, tattoos and criminals are always noted by authorities for personal identification and also give insight to any particular organization, gang or group that the individual is part of and also about the origins, activities, crimes and rank of the individual. Teardrop tattoos usually mean that the individual has murdered someone, or that someone close to the individual was murdered. Neo-Nazis have swastikas, sig runes, celtic crosses, valknuts and other white nationalist/supremacist/Nazi/Germanic/Nordic symbols. The Mexican Mafia often have a triangle with dots signifying "mi vida loca", but most of these Mexican and El Salvadoran gangs, such as MS-13, have the names of their gang boldly tattooed on them. Some background reading: Lina Goldberg, Gang Tattoos: Signs of Belonging and the Transience of Signs http://www.getinked.co.uk/criminal-tattoo-history.html Wahlstedt, E. (2010). Modification through plastic surgery

edit

Hey, great topic. I think the pictures that you have used are really interesting and compliment the content well. I thought that perhaps you could also look into plastic surgery as way that people are increasingly using as a way to modify their bodies. Editing

Hey, really enjoyed reading your topic! I have gone through your page and fixed up your in text referencing in terms of spacing and things like ., &/and. I have also alphabetized your reference list. Some of the references in your reference list aren't correct APA format, but seeing as its 3am I really need to get to bed! I'll have another look in the morning, if you haven't seen this. Finally, I have fixed up some of the spelling/grammar that I saw when doing the referencing.

Best of luck, I really enjoyed the content! --Jetlyn Payne (discusscontribs) 16:11, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

A fascinating chapter! Good attempt, see comments below for future improvement.

I like that the chapter discussed self determination theory (though it wasn’t identified as such). I also liked the Social identity theory and the motivations of each component of the theory for each type of body modification. This showed good in depth analysis. For future improvement, include critical analysis of the theories included for balance.

The chapter clearly benefited from wide and relevant research, well done. Again, for future improvement, remember to critically analyse the research you are reviewing. The chapter also could improve from some definition of terms that some might be unfamiliar with at first.

The chapter was generally well written, but could benefit from a thorough edit as there were some grammatical issues in places. The chapter had some nice figures well done. For future, include in text links an interactive feature such as a quiz to make it more engaging. The APA style could use some work, remember to quote pages after direct quotes, include APA style for figures and DOI’s and web addresses for each reference. Well done! Overall, a great effort. See comments below for feedback

The presentation had a logical flow and covered the key points of the chapter. The presentation would benefit from some more integration of research into the discussion of theory.

The presentation used music to great effect. The presentation would benefit from being reshot to move through the slides at a slower pace – I had a bit of a hard time keeping up at points, and the slides were quite text heavy without narration to help guide the viewer.

The quality of the production was good and the music was great though it stopped about 30secs short of the presentation ending. The presentation made effective use of basic and some more advanced tools, well done. Remember to include licensing information and references. Great effort! Courtney.reis (discusscontribs)
