Social Victorians/People/Schreiber
Also Known As
edit- Family name: Schreiber
- A Mr. Schreiber attended the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 fancy-dress ball.
- Mrs. Ernest Schreiber and two daughters were presented at a Queen's drawing room on 11 March 1896, Miss Schreiber and Miss E. Schreiber, suggesting this family might have had access to the circles present at the Duchess of Devonshire's ball as well. Miss E. Schreiber appears in newspaper reports playing sports and croquet in tournaments.
- William Frederick Duff Schreiber might be W. F. D. Schreiber in newspaper reports.
- Sir Collingwood Schreiber was knighted in 1916.[1]
A large Schreiber family existed at the time of the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball. They seem to have been generally quite wealthy, but their genealogy does not typically appear in peerages, and what is there is incomplete. Reports of births, marriages, deaths, and probates appear in newspaper reports. Also, a number of the Schrebers seem to have been good enough athletes to compete in and win notable tournaments and championships. From these bits and pieces, a genealogy can be constructed. Surmises and guesses are documented in Questions and Notes, and everything else is documented with a footnote (in the list rather than the family tree section).
The following sections try to organize into families the information I've found in genealogical records and digitized newspapers and magazines on Schreibers active at this time. I believe this Mr. Schreiber is Captain Charles S. Schreiber of the 1st Life Guards, although at least one other family had social interactions with this level of society — Mrs. Ernest Schreiber and her daughters.
This page documents research on this family and attempts to identify who might have attended this ball.
Charles S. Schreiber
editThe person attending the Duchess of Devonshire's ball is a Mr. Schreiber, probably Mr. Charles Schuldham Schreiber, who was in the 1st Life Guards and who appears in the "Court Circular" section of the Morning Post from time to time in that role. Captain Schreiber of the 1st Life Guards is clearly identified at the annual Caledonian Ball on 26 June 1899, definitely this Charles S. Schreiber.
Demographics
edit- His parents were or where he fits into the genealogy
- Newspaper reports about his polo playing call him, as if interchangeably, Mr. Schreiber and Captain Schreiber — and Mr. C.S. Schreiber or Mr. Charles S. Schreiber and Captain C.S. Schreiber or Captain Charles S. Schreiber.

Timeline
editI believe that this is the Mr. Schreiber who attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball.
1894 May 23, Wednesday, Mr. Schreiber attended the Duchess of Abercorn's ball at Hampden House, Green-street, Park-lane.
1894 May 26, Saturday, Mr. S. Schreiber played polo in the Handicap Tournament at Ranelagh.[17]
1895 June 1, Saturday, C.S. Schreiber was present at the annual regimental dinner of the 1st Life Guards hosted by the Prince of Wales.
1895 July 5, Saturday, Mr. Schreiber and Miss Schreiber attended a ball at Lord and Lady Wimborne's house on Arlington Street. They were not invited to the dinner, which was small. Could this be Ernest Schreiber rather than C.S. Schreiber? or perhaps Charles S. escorted his sister? or a cousin?
1896 June 10, Wednesday, Mr. Schreiber was present at the fashionable wedding of the Hon. John Tufton and Lady Ierne Hastings, which was reported in the "Court Circular" section of the Morning Post.
1897 July 2, Mr. Schreiber attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball.
1897 July 10, Saturday, Mr. Schreiber played polo with some men with titles: on the Jodhpore side were Lord Kensington, Khunwar Dhokral Singh, Major Turner, and Herji Singh; on the Ranelagh team were Mr. Pilkington, Mr. Schreiber, Lord Harrington, and Captain Fitzgerald.[18] (Col. 2c)
1897 July 13, Tuesday, Mr. Schreiber attended a dance at Montagu House, hosted by the Duchess of Buccleuch.
1897 July 15, Thursday, Mr. Schreiber played polo with some men with titles: on the Paris Polo Club side were M. Escandon, C. Duval, the Marquis de Villavieja, and Sir Humphrey de Trafford; on the Household Brigade side were Lord Kensington, Mr. Clowes, Captain Milner, Mr. Schreiber.[18] (Col. 3c)
1897 July 24, Mr. Schreiber played polo with some men with titles: on the visitor's team were Lord Kensington, Mr. Lambton, Mr. F.W. Balfour, and Mr. Schreiber; on the Ranelagh team were Mr. Spender Clay, Mr. Bernard Wilson, Mr. N. Baring, and Mr. [Smart? type too dark to read].[19]
1898 January 28, Mr. Schreiber was a member of a house party at the Sotheby's and attended a dance associated with the Pytchley Hunt.
1898 May 17, Tuesday, Mr. Schreiber was at a dinner party at Wimborne House hosted by Lord and Lady Wimborne.
1898 July 2, a Mr. Schreiber played polo with some men with titles and seems to have owned a good horse: on the "I Zingari" team were Lord Castlereagh, Mr. Schreiber, Mr. G.A. Miller, and Sir Humphrey de Trafford; on the Ranelagh team were Lord Kensington, Lord Shrewsbury, Messrs E.B. Sheppard and Neil Haig.[20]
1899 March 21, Tuesday, Mr. Charles S. Schreiber, in the 1st Life Guards, was promoted from lieutenant to captain.[21]
1899 April 30, Sunday, The Referee reports on some polo matches in which a Mr. Schreiber played, this time identified as Mr. C.S. Schreiber: on the side of the 1st Life Guards were Captain G.F. Milner, Mr. C.S. Schreiber, Mr. P.B. Cookson, and Mr. W. Waring; on the side of Handley Cross were Mr. F.L. Wallace, Mr. H. Rich, Mr. F.O. Ellison, and Mr. W. Matthews.[22]
1899 June 26, Monday, Captain Schreiber of the 1st Life Guards danced in the Gainesborough Quadrille at the annual Royal Caledonian Ball.
1899 November 23, Thursday, Captain C.S. Schreiber attended a Royal and Imperial Dinner Party at Windsor Castle.
1899 December 27, Wednesday, Captain Schreiber was presented to Queen Victoria at an event around a Christmas tree she had given to the "wives and children of the non-commissioned officers and men of the Household Brigade, as well as those of the reservists residing in the Windsor District, who are on active service in South Africa." Many members of the royal family were present, although the Prince and Princess of Wales were not. Captain Schreiber was a member of the Committee of the Windsor Branch of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families' Association or among the officers commanding in garrison regiments with their adjutants, all of whom apparently were presented to the Queen: "Lady Edward Spencer Churchill, Lady Mary Currie, the Hon. Mrs. Percy Crutchley, Miss Emily Loch, the Hon. Mrs. Bingham. Sir Francis Tress Barry, Bart., M.P., the Very Rev. the Dean of Windsor and Miss Eliot, Sir John Soundy, the Mayor of Windsor, Mr. A. T. Barber; Mr. A. H. Thornton, the Rev. J. Shephard, D.D., vicar of Eton; the Rev. G. Nicholas, M.A., vicar of Clewer St. Stephen; tbe Rev. A. Lee, Congregational minister; Mr. H. J. Gillespie, secretary to the Windsor Branch of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association, and Mrs. Gillespie; Captain Schreiber and Lieutenant Cookson, 1st Life Guards; and Major the Hon. J. St. Aubyn and Lieutenant Clive, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards."[23]
1900, John William Waterhouse painted Margaret Henderson's portrait before she and Charles Shuldham Schreiber were married. Alexander Henderson and his family commissioned a number paintings by Waterhouse.
1900 November 10, Saturday, a number of Schreibers attended the wedding of Captain Charles S. Schreiber ("1st Life Guards, of Marsford Hall, Wickham Market, Suffolk"[24]) and Margaret Henderson ("only daughter of Mr. Alexander Henderson, M.P."[25]) and gave newsworthy gifts: Mrs. C. Schreiber, Mr. Alex Schreiber, Miss M. Schreiber, Mrs. John Schreiber, Captain and Mrs. A. Schreiber, Mrs. Somerset Webb and Miss Hilda Schreiber, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schreiber, Mr. George Schreiber.[14]

He had been using the name Mr. Soanes to visit Miss Le Blanche in Sidney-street, Fulham-road.[105] The judge was Sir F. Jeune.[88]

F. Schreiber, of The Mount, Oswestry."[110]
Questions and Notes
edit- Some Schreiber men seem to have played polo and cricket and some women badminton and croquet well enough to be in competitions reported on in newspapers.
- Thomas Arthur Schreiber: Surmising from the matching names of the sisters that Thomas Schreiber, son of Reverend Thomas Schreiber (the one with 14 children), is Thomas Arthur Schreiber, who died 26 August 1902. Surmising from the notice in the Daily Telegraph that the only sisters he had left were Julia Sarah Schreiber Bloxome, Frances Frederica Louisa Schreiber, and Rose Edith Schreiber; the notice has their middle and married names. This notice also suggests only his brother Collingwood Schreiber was still alive.[66] His estate was valued at £417,026, perhaps around $50,000,000 in today's American dollars. Most of his estate went to his widow and daughter, with some to the living sisters and brother, suggesting that he had only the one child.
- Mr. W.F.D. Schreiber — William Frederick Duff Schreiber (10 December 1847 – c. 1901) — was a well-known breeder of homing pigeons and on the committee London North Road Federation pigeon show and competition in 1898.[111] "Wm Fredk Duff Schriber" is listed as son in law — occupation, distiller — in the 1891 census, apparently living with Alice Mary Schriber's [sic] parents, Henry and Barbara Constantia Cazenove; no children of W.F. Duff and Alice Mary Schreiber are listed.[112] An ad taken out in the 14 September 1901 Field, The Country Gentleman's Newspaper, says that Mrs. Schreiber wishes to recommend W. Burrows, a "working stud groom," because of the death of Mr. W.D.F. Schreiber; "Address, Dalton House, Watford, Herts."[113] William F.D. Schreiber is listed as head of household in the 31 March 1901 census in Watford, Hertfordshire: also present in the household were Alice M. Schreiber, 43; Amy L. James, visitor, 33, from Truro, Cornwall; Nita Castle-Turner, 31, from Norwood, Surrey; and the servants Susan Carter, 40, from Tring, Hertfordshire; Bertha Bailey, 39, from Isle of Wight; Minnie Gates, 24, from Wing, Buckinghamshire; Ellen O. Eplegrave, 21, from Hertfordshire; Nellie G. Morgan, 19, from Monmouthshire; Ernest P. Carpenter, 26, from Hertfordshire; Arthur A. Bugden, 21, from Hertfordshire.[114]
- Arthur Thomas Schreiber, Hengherst, Woodchurch, Ashford (1829 – 26 August 1902): his lambs and sheep (Kentish or Romney Marsh) won prizes at the 1901 Smithfield Club Show.[115]
- A number of members of the family of the Rev. Thomas Schreiber (17 October 1794 – 15 January 1873) seems to have moved to Canada: Weymouth George Schreiber's wife Harriett de Lisle Schreiber, who was born in Guernsey in 1835 and who married into the Schreiber family in 1856, died in Toronto in 1861;[69] Weymouth George Schreiber died in Erindale, Ontario, Canada in 1898.[68]
- Frederick William Schreiber and Matilda Schreiber and 2 children, Priscilla Schreiber and Ernest Schreiber were living in Kelsale, Suffolk in the 1 March 1851 census; his occupation is listed as "Landed Proprietor," and Priscilla's birthplace says, "Prussia British Subject"; also present were 4 servants: Caroline Beach, 41, from London; Eliza Garrod, 17, from Melton, Suffolk; Marianne Trumpeter, 21, from Snape, Suffolk; and Henry Stephens, 17, from Stratford, Suffolk.[116] In the 1 March 1861 census Frederick William Schreiber and Matilda Schreiber are listed with 3 children, Priscilla Emily Schreiber, Frederic Ernest Lowther Schreiber, and Julian Meade Schreiber on Melton Street, in Melton, Suffolk, along with Harriet Andrews, governess, 21, from Egham, Surrey, and 5 servants: Sarah Denny, 33, from Stow Upland, Suffolk; Frances Stubbs, 27, from London; Mary Ann Garnham, 24, from Dallinghoo, Suffolk; Anne Damant, 21, from Melton; and George Scrutton, 26, from Tunstall, Suffolk.[31] In the 1871 census, no children are listed as being in the house that day; Frederick W. Schreiber and Matilda Schreiber are listed (with his occupation as landowner), as is Eugenia Jenney, Frederick W. Schreiber's sister in law (36, from Tunstal, Suffolk); 3 servants are listed: Sarah Hogbin, 53, from Deal, Kent; Mary A. Bailey, 59, from Ash, Suffolk; and Fanny Cooper, 30, from Southwold, Suffolk.[117] In the notice of Matilda's death in 1900, Frederick William Schreiber is called Colonel Schreiber.
- Julian Meade Schreiber belongs to the Shuldham family and is the one Mrs. Louisa Clara Schreiber successfully sued for divorce based on desertion and adultery. He was a lieutenant in the 1st Bedfordshire Regiment. They married on 11 July 1884 at the Marylebone registry office and in a church on 23 August 1884; he left in April 1891.[104] On 1 March 1891, the census records them as living together in Aldershot, Surrey; no servants are listed. First, on 14 December 1892, she petitioned in divorce court for a restitution of conjugal rights because her husband, Army officer Julian Schreiber, had left her. On 19 May 1893, a divorce was granted to Mrs. Louisa Clara Schreiber "by reason of adultery and desertion" by retired Major Julian Schreiber. He had been using the name Mr. Soanes to visit Miss Le Blanche in Sidney-street, Fulham-road.[105] The judge was Sir F. Jeune.[88] He may have married again in the last quarter of 1893 to Annie Green.[118] His will was probated on 18 October 1900, 10 months after his 13 December 1899 death, and his beneficiary was Hilda Rose Schreiber.[48]
- Ernest (Frederic Ernest Lowther) Schreiber: Mrs. Ernest Schreiber and two daughters, Miss Schrieber and Miss Evelyn Schreiber, were presented at court at a Queen's Drawing Room hosted by Alexandra, Princess of Wales on 11 March 1896; since Mrs. Ernest Schreiber did not need to be presented in order to present her daughters, she had been presented before, suggesting that this family may have had the kinds of connections that would give them access to the social circles present at the Duchess of Devonshire's 1897 fancy-dress ball. Mary E. Schreiber is listed as head of the family living in South Bersted, Sussex, in the 1 March 1891 census; this appears to be Ernest Schreiber's family. Besides Mary Eleanor Schreiber, 39, from Middlesex, are Mary E. G. (Mary Eleanor Gwendoline) Schreiber, 15; Mina C. E. (Marie Constance Evelyn Schreiber) Schreiber, 14, Middlesex; Frederic? [sic] E. E. G. Schreiber, 9, born in Wicklow, Ireland; William E. B. Schrieber, 6, Wexford, Ireland; Alice M. M. Meles, boarder, 28, born in Maldon, Essex; Evelyn J. Smith, servant, 21, born in Sussex; Annie Langley, servant, 19, born in Cambridgeshire.[46] This family appears in the 1 March 1901 census as living in Bognor, Sussex, although Ernest Schreiber again is not listed; Mary Eleanor Schreiber is listed, however, as wife rather than widow. Present on that day were Mary Eleanor Schreiber, 50, from Highgate, London; Mary Eleanor Gwendoline Schreiber, 25, from Colchester; Marie Constance Evelyn Schreiber, 24, from St. Pancras; William B. Schreiber, 16, from Wexford, Ireland; Arthur T. Berkwilt, visitor, 25, Winchets, Hampshire; servants were Lucy Mills, 27, from Walberton, Sussex; Helen Cox, 32, from Winkfield, Berkshire; Agnes Emily Cooper, 25, from Liverpool.[119]
