• "The Late Mr Ernest Cust. — The death is announced of Mr. Ernest Cust, only son of the late Colonel the Hon. Charles Cust (at one time M.P. for North Shropshire), which took place at his Cowes residence, Castlerock, yesterday week, at the age of 44. He had been ill for three weeks, but his death was unexpected. He was heir presumptive to the Earldom of Brownlow. The deceased gentleman was well known in yachting circles as the owner of the Yacht Bianca and a member of the Royal Yacht Society."
• "By the death of Mr Ernest Cust, which we recorded last week, Mr Henry J. Cust, M.P., editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, becomes heir presumptive to the Earldom of Brownlow."
• "The death of Mr. Ernest Cust has cast quite a gloom over Cowes, where he resided during the greater part of the year, and he was most generous to his poorer neighbours, and a munificent supporter of all charitable objects. Mr. Cust was a well known member of the R.Y.S., and an enthusiastic yachtsman, and he kept his pretty cutter, the Bianca, fitted out during two-thirds of the year. Mr. Cust was the heir to Lord Brownlow's title and estates, and he is succeeded in that position by his cousin, Mr. Henry Cust, M.P."
