There is the perception, even in drug addicts themselves, that drug use leads to a feeling of euphoria - but recent reviews on acute emotional effects suggest that in fact, their sense of a high relates to only comparable levels of positive and negative affect to healthy controls, i.e. that they only come back to normal (Blum et al. 2013).
