Wikiversity remembers Mike Irwin

This page is a dedication of Tributes to Mike Irwin. A former Wikiversitarian highly esteemed and loved in this community.

On February 29, 2008 the Wikiversity community was notified that Mike Irwin has unexpectedly passed away. Mike was a dedicated and enthusiastic contributor right from the beginning of this project. His absence is a deep loss for us.

The following is a count of Mikes's contributions to Wikimedia Projects:

  • -- en.wikiversity.org
2436 User contributions ( registered at: 2006-08-16T07:33:43 )
  • -- en.wikipedia.org
425 User contributions ( registered at: 2002-02-08T00:42:36 )
  • -- beta.wikiversity.org
1 User contribution
  • Total Contributions
2941 contributions found in 3 projects

To understand what effort was required to do the above contributions(time-wise), estimate each contribution requiring ±20min. Mike will have spent 980 Hours of his life editing. That amounts to about 41 full days!

For the above effort we present the Original Barnstar and a Wikipedia Laurier for lifetime achievement to Mike Irwin for his much missed contributions to Wikiversity and other Wikimedia projects.

Thuvack - - Remembers Mirwin

Did Not have the honour of meeting/chatting to Mike but, have encountered his work in most conners of this Project. Great respect from the southern Sun. You are much missed!

May the earth embrace your remains, as God embraces your soul and we… your Memory

Well, at the last chat I had with him he asked me a personal question, which I didn't answer him :-( I guess he can hear the answer now, ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 16:38, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The odd thing about Mirwin from my perspective is that I got to "know" him as an editor much better after he passed away. Much of my most significant activity as an editor has been since he left us - and almost everywhere I turn at Wikiversity, I find that Mirwin was there first with his own contributions. Back in those days, too many of us were not sufficiently aware of each other's activities. I hope that Wikiversity:Participants (started shortly after his death) will help us take better note of each other during our lifetimes. --McCormack 04:51, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting anology, What do the logic 1's and 0's stand for? --Thuvack | talk | Blog 06:29, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This has made me very sad

edit

I found the bad news today. I was revieweing old Talk page conversations, and clicking on the User pages. I was doing that because I wanted to know a bit more about the people with which I interacted in my times as an active contributor. One of those conversations was a question about quantum physics I answered to Mike, and upon reading it again now I had the impression that I had been rather obscure in my answer. Feeling uneasy about that I then clicked on Mike's User page and found that there's no way to revert that ever.

Mike :(
