Wikiversity - Help Desk post

This page is for general knowledge questions, such as "What country has the world's largest fishing fleet ?" To ask a question about Wikiversity, and its technical and policy issues visit the Wikiversity:Colloquium.

Wikiversity was created so that people who are trying to learn, "have a place to come and interact and help each other figure out how to learn things" (source). When responding to help desk questions, it may be useful to provide links to useful sources of information. When asking questions, please keep in mind the nature of Wikiversity: Wikiversity participants do not provide professional answers to medical, legal or any other type of question. Template stylesEdit

Somehow template styles do not seem to work, when the template is first used in a link. Compare this revision with the one before (not in link) and the one after (with dummy template call before). (template, styles) --Watchduck (quack) 17:15, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

@Watchduck: You might check for or file a Phabricator: task. It's not something we would be able to resolve locally as far as I know. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 00:14, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Reference TooltipsEdit

I have Reference Tooltips enabled in Preferences but it does not work. Can anyone advise what the problem is? Thanks. Dudley Miles (discusscontribs) 21:59, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

From the Gadgets page, "(does not work if "Navigation popups" is enabled)". If that's not the issue, try a different browser. I just tested and Reference Tooltips were working for me (Chrome on macOS). -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 00:21, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I have Reference Tooltips ticked and no other gadgets enabled. I have tried Firefox, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge and it works on none of them. Any other ideas? Dudley Miles (discusscontribs) 19:35, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Does it work on Wikipedia? If so, I'm out of ideas. I just tested again. For me it works when turned on and stops working when turned off. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 22:31, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Yes it works fine on Wikipedia. Are there ways of getting further advice on Wikiversity, e.g. by {{helpme}}? Or would the Wikipedia technical people advise? Dudley Miles (discusscontribs) 23:28, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
At this point you would need some JavaScript experience to troubleshoot. Perhaps User:DannyS712 has suggestions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 00:19, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
Will try to look into this when I have time, no promises - not familiar with this gadget DannyS712 (discusscontribs) 00:53, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

I have tried copying the article to a Wikipedia sandbox and tooltips does not work there even though it works on other Wikipedia sandboxes. Dudley Miles (discusscontribs) 09:21, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
Sorry I have further clarified how tooltips works in Wikiversity which I should have checked before. In Wikipedia if you hover over a citation number eg [24] you see the reference, and if it is an sfn reference and you hover over the reference eg. Abels 1998, you then get the full bibliographical details. In a Wikiversity article eg WikiJournal of Science/Affine symmetric group, hovering over the citation number works but not hovering over the reference. In User:Dudley Miles/sandbox hovering does not work. Maybe tooltips is not implemented in Wikiversity for sandboxes, but in that case why does copying over to Wikipedia not work? Dudley Miles (discusscontribs) 10:09, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
See mw:Reference Tooltips. Hovering over the reference number in the article is the only functionality supported. Other features aren't part of this gadget and aren't installed at Wikiversity. Any questions related to functionality at Wikipedia need to be addressed at Wikipedia. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:55, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
