Department of the Czech LanguageWelcome to the Czech language at Wikiversity, part of the Center for Foreign Language Learning and the School of Language and Literature. Introduction to the Czech LanguageCzech [ʧɛk] (čeština [ˈʧɛʃ.cɪ.na]) is one of the West Slavic languages, along with Slovak and Polish. It is spoken by most people in the Czech Republic and by Czechs all over the world (about 12 million native speakers in total). Czech is relatively close to Slovak. In fact, because the Czech Republic (in red) and Slovakia (in blue) were united in a federation for most of the 20th century, citizens of either state are able to understand the other language. This is changing since the velvet divorce between the two states.

Verb conjugationVocabularyFalse Friends with CzechFalse friends are pairs of words in two languages that look and/or sound similar, but differ in meaning. At the very least, they make learning the language more difficult. At worst, the wrong word may change the entire meaning of your sentence. There are few false friends between Czech and English. There are, however, more between Czech and other Slavonic languages. Wikibooks provides the following lists of false friends.
