I think the task is too structured... probably because the poor teacher feels compelled to match it to some grand syllabus prescribed to her. It would be better - in terms of the learning about zines, if the task allowed for more individual discovery and expression, with the technical skills of its creation being the framework for that - rather than the realtively 'unfun' link to an old dead book, and slightly patronising notions of "marginalised". Zines certainly have been the artifact of subcultures and creative individuals.. but I'm not sure they would identify as marginalised. I have seen numerous zines these days put out by small business marketing firms and the like, in an attempt to reach niche markets in those sub cultures... Perhaps read the old book, and create the zine.. but make very little expressed connection between the two.. see if the connection that the current task presently prescribes, emerges in conversation.
