Solicitations

Dear Dave.

Thank you for your edits to our HINARI page. You removed a link which you considered "might be considered solicitations". I hope you would not mind me undoing this. HINARI is a free website but does not allow cataloging of the 18500 e-books available to students in some of the poorest countries in the world. The only way we can hope for our Wikiversity (which beautifully allows collaboration) catalogue to be spread by students in these countries is to have a link to Facebook. We make no money from any of this and only hope that we can guide more students to the wikiversity page. Kind regards. Peter, I've moved the discussion here to associate it with the content. Please see Wikiversity: External links. I see the link to the HINARI Facebook page as both a link intended to promote a website and a link to social networking. I can certainly understand how having a link from the Facebook page to Wikiversity would help your mission, but I don't understand how a link from Wikiversity back to Facebook helps educate anyone. It is a very good question. We are only at the beginning of this journey so we have a lot to learn. Our primary purpose is to get the wikiversity page used as much as possible as this will mean Medical Students/Residents can find a single portal into free e-books (on HINARI). We chose a wiki style format as if a student finds another resource on HINARI they can add it themselves. We therefore plan to advertise the Wikiversity page through usual channels e.g. emails from Dean etc. However we do know from experience that students use Facebook a lot and can see each others activity (which they cannot do with wikiversity). Our hope is therefore that if they "like" our Facebook page (which contains a link to the wikiversity page) we will be able to expose more people to the Wikiversity page. I hope that helps. I've rolled back my rollback. It's hard to argue in principle with using social media to promote Wikiversity, and that's all the Facebook link does. I would recommend also adding the Wikipedia: Template:Wikiversity template to all relevant Wikipedia pages, and adding links to the Wikiversity HINARI page on other locations where medical students might find them. I've been able to get five to ten hits a day on the resources I've created just through these approaches (for computer networking students).
