Talk:Collaborative computing/Host, router & subnet

The definition of a router is not quite accurate. A router does not necessarily connect two different networks, it may also connect two or more transmission lines within a single network. The common name for a machine (router) that makes a connection between two networks is a gateway. (See Tanenbaum, p. 46 and p. 50). Unfortunately, the term subnet may refer to different concepts, such as a subdivision of an IP network, but also to a collection of transmission lines and routers, see e.g Tanenbaum p. 46 and p. 50. Please clarify and make explicit the different meanings of the term. --Bansler (talk) 12:46, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
