Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball
editAt the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Major Herbert Marmaduke Joseph Stourton (at 277) was one of the Ladies and Gentlemen of the Court in the procession of the Empress Catherine II of Russia.[2][3]
Henry Bullingham's portrait of "Herbert Marmaduke Joseph Stourton as a member of the Court of Catherine II of Russia" in costume is photogravure #196 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[4] The printing on the portrait says, "Mr. H. M. Stourton as a member of the Court of Catherine II of Russia," with a Long S in Russia.[5]
Dressed in a military costume, Stourton appears to be wearing a version of the Coat of Arms of the Russian Empire, or the Imperial Coat of Arms, (right) on the left side of his cloak. Catherine the Great, or Catherine II of Russia, (2 May 1729 – 17 November 1796) ruled Russia from 1762 until her death.[6]
