Miss Stirling edit

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Miss Stirling (at 47), possibly Evelyn Mary Caroline Lilah Stirling, was dressed as Countess Kinskey in the Austrian Court of Maria Theresa Quadrille with Mr. Brodrick as Count Kinskey.[1]:7, Col. 6b [2] [3]:p. 8, Col. 1b

Miss Stirling is also sometimes listed, however, as one of the Archduchesses in attendance on Theresa Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry, who led the Austrian procession as Marie Thérèse.[4]:p. 3, Col. 3a The Archduchesses were the Empress's daughters. The newspapers report that the archduchesses were all dressed alike, but only one photograph exists of any of these young women in costume — that of Helen Mary Theresa Vane-Tempest-Stewart (which is shown, right). The newspaper descriptions are on her page, with her portrait in costume, but they apply to all the archduchesses.

Notes and Questions edit

  1. Find a way to confirm who Miss Stirling was (at the Duchess of Devonshire's ball).
  2. The Morning Post and the Times say Miss Stirling was part of the Marie-Thérèse procession as Countess Kinskey.[8] [1]:p. 7, Col. 6b The Guernsey Star says she was one of the archduchesses attending the Marchioness of Londonderry,[9] and the Belfast News-Letter says Miss Seymour was among the archduchesses instead.[10]:p. 6, Col. 1b Except for the Guernsey Star and the Belfast News-Letter, the reports agree that there were 4 rather than 5 archduchesses.
