Costumes at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball
editLord Alwyne Frederick Compton (at 434) and Lady Mary Compton (at 435) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball.[5]
Lady Alwyne was dressed as "Mme. de Chevreuse, Louis XIII." time, wearing a "dress in mauve satin, with white satin underskirt, embroidered in pearls and amethysts."[6]:36, Cols. 1c, 2b
Madame de Chevreuse (December 1600 – 12 August 1679) was Marie Aimée de Rohan, French courtier actively involved with a number of very dangerous political intrigues.[7] She was very close to Anne d'Autriche, Queen of France. She is shown wearing pearls in many of her portraits; one necklace shown in several portraits is made up of noticeably large pearls. The 17th-century portrait (right) of Marie de Rohan, Duchess of Chevreuse is currently in the Château de Dampierre.
London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company's portrait of "Lord Alwyne Frederick Compton as Sir William Compton — time of Charles I" in costume is photogravure #211 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[8] The printing on the portrait says, "Lord Alwyne Compton, M.P. as Sir Wm. Compton, time of Charles I."[9]
Lord Alwyne Compton is probably dressed as Sir William Compton (1625 – 18 October 1663), a Cavalier — a royalist and in his case an army officer in the conflict leading up to the execution of King Charles I in 1649 — even though he was young when Charles I died.[10]
