Notes and Questions
edit- Elizabeth St. Aubyn was born before 1815, seven years before her parents married.[4]
- General Rt. Hon. Sir William Thomas Knollys died in the House of Lords.[1]
- I haven't given Hon. Louvima Knollys a number for the ball, as she would have been perhaps 7 years old, not a guest in the way the other guests were.
- Hon. Charlotte (Elizabeth Charlotte) Knollys did not marry, so she would have been Miss Knollys in 1897. In a report of a 1903 fire in Alexandra's bedroom at night, the Westminster Gazette says that Hon. Charlotte Knollys "is well known as the Queen's constant companion."[23] Discussing an upcoming honor to be conferred on Miss Knollys, the Dundee Courier says she, "of course, is the daughter of Lord Knollys, the King's private secretary, and one of the most kindly and considerate of Court officials," which would be Francis Knollys.[24] Charlotte's father died in 1883; Francis Knollys' daughter was Hon. Louvima (Alexandra Louvima Elizabeth) Knollys, who would not have been old enough, and on whom an honor was not conferred at this time. So I think the Dundee Courier has made a mistake here. Apparently Charlotte Knollys did more than just attend Alexandra. She is reported as having attended Princess Victoria of Wales as well as Princess Charles of Denmark (Princess Maud of Wales); this story from the Tamworth Herald cites the Onlooker about Charlotte Knollys' relationships and work with the entire family:
Referring to the kindly relations subsisting between the Queen and Miss Knollys, the "Onlooker" states that all the Royal Family are devoted to Miss Knollys, and she has been the friend and confidante of all the young Princesses Wales, their playmate, as well sometimes instructress in various accomplishments not altogether to do with schooling. She is a wonderful linguist, and can speak several languages with the greatest fluency; she is a very fair artist, and has often accompanied the Queen on sketching epxeditions [sic]; while she excels in the graceful art of skating, and has been the instructress of most of the Royal children.[25]
