At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Sir Charles (at 111) dressed as

  • "Sir Charles Hartopp (Napoleon I.), green coat with red facings; white vest and breeches."[3]:36, Col 3b
  • "Napoleon I. Green coat with red facings, white vest and breeches, Orders on breast."[4]:8, Col. 1c

Lady Millicent Hartopp (at 488) came as the Empress Josephine.

Henry Van der Weyde's portrait of "Sir Charles Edward Cradock-Hartopp, 5th Bt as Napoleon I; Millicent Florence Eleanor (née Wilson), Lady Cradock-Hartopp (later Countess Cowley and Mrs Duberly) as the Empress Josephine" in costume is photogravure #255 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "Sir Charles Hartopp, as Napoleon I. Lady Hartopp, as the Empress Josephine," with a Long S in Empress.[6]

The portrait (upper left) of Napoleon was painted by François Gérard in 1803 and is part of the collection at the Condé Museum, Château de Chantilly.[7] It shows him wearing a green coat with red trim. Sir Charles Hartopp's nose is reminiscent of Napoleon's; perhaps putting himself in profile makes sure we notice that.

The portrait (lower left) of Empress Joséphine — then Joséphine de Beauharnais — was painted by Henri-François Riesener in 1806 and is part of the collection at the Musée at the Château Malmaison.[8] The dress in this portrait is not likely the original for Millicent, Lady Hartopp's dress, but the jeweled belt, the panel down the front, the velvet cloak, and the long gloves may have suggested elements of the design.
