Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball
editAt the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Margaret (the Hon. Mrs. Ronald) Greville (at 298) was dressed as Mary Seton (usually misspelled in these as Seaton) in the Queen Elizabeth procession (according to the labeling in the National Portrait Gallery[9] and the Morning Post[10]). (But see the Hon. Mrs Greville, at 299, who is dressed differently.) The Gentlewoman says "Mary Seaton, in which, followed in [Lady Edmonstone's Mary Queen of Scots'] wake."[11]:p. 32, Col. 3c
Alice Hughes's portrait of "Dame Margaret Helen Greville (née Anderson) as Mary Seaton [sic] in the Elizabethan Procession" in costume is photogravure #51 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[12] The printing on the portrait says, "The Hon. Mrs. Ronald Greville as Mary Seaton in the Elizabethan procession," with a Long S in procession.[9]
It seems likely that her husband, Ronald Greville, was present, but as yet he is not identified.
Mary Seton (1542–1615) was one of the four Marys who were Ladies-in-Waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots; she was her hairdresser. She left the queen's household in c. 1585 and died at the Convent of Saint-Pierre at Reims, a nun.[13]

Notes and Questions
edit- Where was Ronald Greville; was he present but not mentioned? A Mr. Greville attended, accompanying Lady M. Greville, but Ronald would likely to have been called Hon.?
- Margaret Helen Anderson's parentage was complex; I don't know yet how much was known at the time. Her mother was Helen Anderson, who was married to William Anderson, but her father was William McEwan, who owned the brewery where William Anderson worked.[19] Helen Anderson and William McEwan married in 1885 shortly after the death of William Anderson, when Margaret Helen Anderson was 21.[19]
