At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Florence Canning, Lady Garvagh (at 336) was dressed as Comtesse d'Artois in the Quadrille of the Louis XV. and Louis XVI. Period.[3]

Alexander Bassano's portrait of "Alice Florence (née de Bretton), Lady Garvagh" in costume is photogravure #228 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[4] The printing on the portrait says, "Lady Garvagh."[5]

The Comtesse d'Artois (1756–1805) was married to Charles Philippe, Count of Artois, who after her death became King Charles X of France.[6] The portrait of her (left), painted c. 1775 by François-Hubert Drouais, is currently in the collections at Versailles but in the 19th century was held in the collection of the Dukes of Mortemart at the Château du Réveillon in Burgundy.[7] It does not seem likely to be the original for Lady Garvagh's costume, although some similarities exist, like the gap in the fabric so the skin shows at the shoulders and near the elbows as well, of course, as the flowers.
