Notes and Questions edit

  1. The National Portrait Gallery identifies Miss Keith Fraser as Helena Violet Alice (née Fraser), Countess of Stradbroke. She's Miss Keith Fraser because her father was Keith Fraser.
  2. Helena Violet Alice Fraser had two brothers, Keith Alexander Fraser and Hugh. Both the newspaper reports in the Morning Post and the Times call the person who attended with Helena Captain Fraser; the Album in the National Portrait Gallery calls him Captain Hugh Fraser.[15] All three sources say he went as the Duke of Tarsis or Duca di Tarsis. Both men were captains at this time, but their father died on 30 July 1895 and Keith inherited the baronetcy, which meant that his proper honorific — assuming the newspapers got it right — would have been Sir rather than Captain. Sometimes the name Fraser was misspelled as Frazer.[12]
  3. Added the Earl of Stradbroke in the AKA section of this page because the Frasers were more important socially and married into the Rous family.
