Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball edit

Hon. Marie Hay edit

Marie (Agnes Blanche Marie) Hay-Drummond (at 682) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball.

Lafayette's portrait of "(Agnes Blanche) Marie (née Hay-Drummond), Baroness von Hindenburg as Mademoiselle Andrée de Taverney A.D. 1775" in costume is photogravure #227 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[13] The printing on the portrait says, "The Hon. Marie Hay as Mademoiselle Andrée de Taverney A.D. 1775."[14]

Agnes Blanche Marie Hay-Drummond or Marie Hay was not mentioned in any press reports, but her portrait is in the commemorative album of portraits.

Andrée de Taverney is the main character in a novel by Alexander Dumas pére set during the French Revolution. The original novel is Joseph Balsamo: Memories of a Physician, but because it is so long, it is often cut into two parts, the second of which is Andrée de Taverney: Or, The Downfall of French Monarchy, or sometimes The Mesmerist's Victim. Andrée is a daughter of a Baron, whose tragic life begins when she is raped and then loses her child to his father when she refuses to marry him. She becomes a lady in waiting at the court of Marie Antoinette and the personal friend of the queen, whom she remains loyal to, even though it costs her her life.

Hon. Claude Hay and Mrs. Hay edit

The Hon. Claude Hay (at 565) and Mrs. Hay (at 566) are reported as having attended the ball (as "the Hon. Claude and Mrs. Hay),[15]:p. 12, Col. 4b but Mrs. Hay is not Mrs. Claude Hay because, according to the 1911 census, he was single, and she cannot be his mother, who died in 1895.[16] The Gentlewoman says "Lady C Hay."[17]:p. 35, 2a

Relations edit

  • Hon. Alistair George Hay-Drummond and Hon. Camilla Dagmar Violet Greville were married,[10] so he was the son-in-law of Lady Violet Greville. They were no longer married by 1909 and both remarried after that, so they must have divorced.
  • Lady Agnes Hay-Drummond Flower and Sir Alfred Cooper married in 1882,[8] so Cooper was Marie Hay-Drummond's stepfather at the time of the ball. Albert Edward, Prince of Wales was one of his patients.[28] Cooper was a prominent surgeon specializing in venereal disease and was familiar with the aristocracy.[28] His caricature portrait (above right) by Leslie Ward ("Spy") in the 30 December 1897 issue of Vanity Fair is Number 699 in its "Men of the Day" series.[29]

Notes and Questions edit

  1. Marie Hay-Drummond was single at the time of the ball, not marrying until 1903.
  2. The Earl of Kinnoull at the time of the ball was Archibald FitzRoy George Hay-Drummond, 13th Earl of Kinnoull.
  3. Lady Constance Hay-Drummond married in 1880, so Lady C. Hay (as identified by the Gentlewoman) is probably not Constance.[9] It would be surprising for Lady C. Hay to be the Hon. Camilla Greville Hay, as her honorific would be Hon. rather than Lady, although newspapers did make mistakes on honorifics sometimes. One person likely to be called Lady Hay might be Florence, Countess Kinnoull. The Lady Cecilia Hay was a schooner that went in and out of ports in the U.K. during this time carrying cargo. The daughter of the 19th Earl of Erroll, Lady Cecilia Leila Hay married Captain George Allan Webbe on 31 October 1883[30] but apparently was called Lady Cecilia Hay after that, for example in 1893 in newspaper articles about charitable work.[31] Did the Hon. Claude Hay and Lady Cecilia Hay know each other?
  4. The Hon. Claude Hay died in 1920 in Sebastopol, Crimea. In the National Probate Calendar, his effects were £633 10s. 3d. (so approximately £78,000).[32]
