Katherine Mary Drummond edit

Katherine Mary Drummond (at 309) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball. The various accounts describe her costume in slightly different ways:

  • The Gentlewoman says she was a "lady of the Court of Louis XIII.," dressed in "pale blue satin, with petticoat edged silver braid, with three sets of ruby and diamond buttons."[3]:p. 36, Col. 1b
  • The Morning Post, Times (and hence Evening Mail) say she was was dressed as Donna Caranado in the 17th-century procession.[4][5][6]:p. 8, Col. 1c
  • The National Portrait Gallery says she came as a lady from the time of Charles II.[7]

Alexander Bassano's portrait of "Katherine Mary Drummond (née Antrobus) as a lady from the time of Charles II" in costume is #75 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[8] The printing on the portrait says, "Mrs. Lawrence Drummond as a lady of the time of Charles II."[7]
