Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball

edit

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Margaret Montagu-Douglas-Scott, Countess of Dalkeith (at 460) was dressed as Helen, Countess of Dalkeith. John Charles Montagu Douglas Scott, Earl of Dalkeith (at 459) was also present. They were called Lord and Lady Dalkeith in the newspapers.

Lafayette's portrait of "Margaret Alice Montagu-Douglas-Scott (née Bridgeman), Duchess of Buccleuch when Countess of Dalkeith as Helen, Countess of Dalkeith" in costume is #223 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "The Countess of Dalkeith as Helen Countess of Dalkeith," with a Long S both times Countess is used.[6]

Who Margaret, Countess of Dalkeith meant by Helen, Countess of Dalkeith is not clear.
