editL. Brassey (at 252), Mr. Harold Brassey (at 253), Mr. Brassey, Henry Leonard Campbell Brassey (at 530), Lady Violet Brassey (at 531) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball.
Mr. Leonard Brassey and Lady Violet Brassey
editMr. Brassey and Lady Violet Brassey are Henry Leonard Campbell Brassey (at 530) and Lady Violet Brassey (at 531). Lady Violet Brassey was Juliet, in a "gown in blue brocade with gold sleeves, white satin embroidery over-sleeves, and gold waistband to match."[18]:p. 36, Col. 1c
- Leonard Brassey was dressed as Apollo, wearing the same costume as Mr. Leopold Brassey, below, "only light blue and gold" rather than white and gold.[18]:p. 42, Col. 1b
- "Mr. Leonard Brassey (Apollo), same as above [in this case, below, Mr. Leopold Brassey] only light blue and gold."[19]:p. 3, Col. 5a
Mr. Harold Brassey
editMr. Harold Brassey (at 253) is Harold Ernest Brassey, Henry Leonard Campbell Brassey's brother. Harold Brassey was a Yeoman in the Queen Elizabeth procession.
- "The two heralds who preceded the Queen were Mr. Harold Brassey and Mr. E. Villiers, while Lord Rothschild, in a splendid costume of the time, walked between them."[18]:p. 32, Col. 3c
- He was one of the six halberdiers attending on the Queen, their costumes copied from Holbein's picture at Hampton Court.[20]:p. 5, Col. 7a
Mr. Leopold Brassey
editMr. Leopold or L. Brassey (at 252) was in the Duchess procession. Like Leonard Brassey, Leopold Brassey was dressed as Apollo, although the costumes themselves were not identical.
- "Mr. Leopold Brassey, as Apollo, in the time of Louis XV., wore a white leather cuirasse embossed and edged with gold, and with a gold sun in front. From this depended a short pale yellow skirt of silk, the breeches and over sleeves being embroidered with gold. A gold laurel wreath and a gold lyre indicated the Apollo of the time of the pleasure-loving Louis and Madame du Barry."[19]:p. 3, Col. 5a
- "Mr. Leopold Brassey (Apollo), white leather cuirass embossed and edged with gold, with a gold sun on front of cuirass; pale yellow silk skirt, breeches, and over sleeves, embroidered with gold; cloak, orange silk, with border of pale yellow and embroidered with gold; orange leather sandal boots."[18]:p. 42, Col. 1b
Questions and Notes
edit- Thomas Brassey was a railroad magnate.[2]
- Henry Leonard Campbell Brassey was known as Leonard Brassey, at least in the 1925 London City Directory: Leonard Brassey, Bart., M.P., lived at 42 Upper Grosvenor Street and was married to Violet.[7]
- The Gentlewoman article says that both a Mr. Leonard Brassey and a Mr. Leopold Brassey were present. If Henry Leonard Campbell Brassey used Leonard rather than Henry as his forename, then he might be Mr. Leonard Brassey. We know he was present because his wife is easy to identify. Mr. Leopold Brassey does not seem to show up in any genealogies for this family.
