Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball
editSir Ralph Blois (at 593) attended the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball dressed as Jérôme-Napoléon Bonaparte, King of Westphalia.[4]:p. 12, Col. 4b
Lafayette's portrait of "Sir Ralph Barrett Macnaghten, 9th Bt as Jerome Buonaparte, King of Westphalia" in costume is photogravure #220 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[5] The printing on the portrait says, "Sir Ralph Bart. as Jerome Buonaparte, King of Westphalia."[6]
The portrait (right) of Jérome Bonaparte, King of Westphalia (1784–1860)[7] and Catharina of Württemberg, Queen of Westphalia (1783–1835)[8] is in the collections at the Chateau de Versailles. It was painted by François-Joseph Kinson between 1802–1839[9] but probably after 1810. In a similar portrait of this couple dated 1810, they look younger and she is wearing a different white dress, but Jérome Bonaparte reigned only from 1807–1813.[7] If Sir Ralph Blois was following Louisa, Duchess of Devonshire's rules, his costume was supposed to be dated to before 1820.
