Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball

edit

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, “Lady Esther [Gore] Smith wore a blue satin 'Henrietta Marie' dress."[9]:Col. 1

By Henrietta Marie, Lady Smith may have meant Henrietta Maria de Bourbon (1609–1669), who was married to Charles I of England.[10] Anthony van Dyck's 1633 Henrietta Maria and the Dwarf, Sir Jeffrey Hudson (right) was in the collection of the Earls of Northbrook at least between 1881 and 1904 and is now in the National Gallery.[11] It shows the queen in a blue satin gown.

Arthur, Earl of Arran was dressed as Cardinal Loraine in the Queen Elizabeth procession.[12] "Notable" was "Lord Arran as a cardinal."[13][14] As a Cardinal, he was wearing "scarlet cloth robe, trimmed with lace; scarlet cape, biretta, &c."[15]:34, Col. 2a

By Cardinal Loraine, the Earl may have meant Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine (1524–1574).[16] El Greco's c. 1572 Portrait of Charles de Guise, cardinal of Lorraine, archbishop of Reims (left) is now in the Kunsthaus Zürich.[17]

Notes and Questions

edit
  1. Two Earls of Arran existed at this time, one in the Irish peerage, and the other in the Scottish peerage. The family name of the Irish Earl of Arran was Gore; the Scottish Earl of Arran is a subsidiary title for the Duke of Hamilton.[18] The Earl of Arran at the ball was likely the Irish one because the Westminster Review mentions the daughter of the Earl at the time of the ball, Lady Esther Gore Smith.
  2. Lady Esther Smith was at the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, but her husband William Frederick Danvers Smith is not mentioned. She is mentioned so far only in the Westminster Gazette.[9]:Col. 1
  3. Arthur Earl of Arran and Winifred Ellen Reilly Stopford were married at the time of the ball; where was she? What she present and just not recognized?
  4. Lady Esther Smith and Arthur Earl of Arran were also at a Garden Party at Marlborough House on 9 July 1891.
  5. Saunders-Knox-Gore is a family in County Mayo, with a country house Belleek Manor, Garrankeel, Ballina, Mayo. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Francis Arthur Knox-Gore (1803-73) was first Baronet.[22]
