Evelyn, Lady Alington edit

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, Evelyn, Lady Alington was dressed as the Duchesse de Nevers:

  • "XVI. Century costume of cerise velvet with white satin front panel richly embroidered with silver and studded with pearls and rubies; the bodice had a stomacher of white satin, also embroidered with jewels, including diamonds, and the sleeves were slashed with white satin; high Medici collar of old lace. Ruby and diamond coronet and double necklace of the same."[7]:p. 7, Col. 7c
  • "the Duchesse de Nevers, a lady from the court of Marguerite de Valois."[8]

Henry Bullingham's portrait of "Evelyn Henrietta (née Leigh), Lady Alington as Duchesse de Nevers, Dame de la Cour de S.M. Marguérite de Valois" in costume is photogravure #202 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.[9] The printing on the portrait says, "Lady Alington as Duchesse de Nevers, Dame de la Cour de S.M. Marguérite de Valois," with a Long S in Duchesse.[10]

Questions and Notes edit

  1. Henry Gerard Sturt, 1st Baron Alington is not listed as having attended the Duchess of Devonshire's ball; he would have been 72 years old. Evelyn Sturt, Lady Alington was there — a photograph exists; if she was 80 when she died, then she would have been born in c. 1860, so possibly about 40ish at the time of the ball.
  2. Charles William Augustus Montagu was Hon. Mildred Cecilia Harriet Sturt's third husband; they did not marry until 1930 although they are in the same portrait in the Album (#209). She was Lady Chelsea in 1897.
