Welcome to Wikiversity's Non-formal Education Portal. Non-formal education is the official umbrella term for all education which takes place outside the formal sector, where formal education comprises the provision of education at pre-school, primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Non-formal education includes learning alongside and outside schools and universities, such as sports and hobbies. It also includes much of professional and vocational education, adult literacy training and lifelong learning. Opportunities for non-formal education may be provided by libraries, companies and clubs as well as by schools and colleges in the form of extra-curricular activities. On the international scale, non-formal education is critical in developing countries as a method of overcoming inherited skills deficits.
Wikiversity is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation (which also runs Wikipedia) and our Non-formal Education Portal offers everyone, from all over the world, the opportunity to create and share open resources. Everything you place here will be immediately available to others, and you can immediately use or adapt anything which others have placed here. If Wikiversity is able to emulate the success of its sister project at Wikipedia, then we can hope to build one of the world's largest centres for non-formal education here.
