Glossary of musical terms/Fifth

(Redirected from Dominant)

The fifth is regarded, in western musical tradition as a very important interval. Because of the tendency of a melodic line to jump from the tonic upward to the fifth, then return to the fifth frequently, it is also known as the dominant of a given scale.
