How Does Smart Road Technology Work?

edit

The concept of smart roads is to develop a more efficient way for long-term transportation needs such as traffic management that would be monitored with sensors, cameras, and radar 5G technology, all created with AI. This would be an infrastructure like adaptive traffic, so basically the traffic lights would automatically adjust, using the sensor data to enhance more of the traffic flow for the people on the road along with preventing collisions. Intel mentioned that "Smart road technology is not a futuristic concept. It’s already being implemented worldwide, with many cities and countries experiencing the benefits today".[1]

Example Analysis

edit

In order to demonstrate the results, the city of Turin has begun the pre-trail of this experiment. They can enhance some departments that might not be up to their exact standards by using AI technology.[2]

Advantages

edit

The foundation for the radars is easily removable, they’re able to adjust and relocate the sensors to any place that they are needed. These sensors would be placed above the traffic lights like we have seen in the traffic camera. But in this case, they wouldn’t just be there to capture any wrongdoings, but instead to be a helping hand to all on the road. The future of smart roads will create a profound impact on transportation for all, enabling a new meaning to driving in the city.

Better control of the facilities

edit

Road conditions, including deterioration, damage, and maintenance requirements, may be examined in actual time because of smart road systems. Ensuring that repairs and maintenance are done on time, can lower the likelihood of accidents and enhance the general condition of the roads.[3]

Tracking traffic

edit

Information useful for route planning by users. Highway liners are lined with sensors that track weight loads and traffic flow, alert authorities to accidents automatically, and warn drivers of traffic blocks. Vehicle-to-road communication can enhance traffic management, and fiber-optic cables installed in the pavement can detect deterioration. For instance, traffic signals that react to passing vehicles and each other are controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) in quick movement technology. While modern technologies can process and manage flows in actual time, traditional systems were pre-programmed to maximize circulation during busy traffic hours.[4]

Smart Roads Technologies

edit

The NH1 highway in India is renowned as one of the world's worst roads. With Leo Burnett India, HP Lubricants installed SmartLife poles at tight bends and severe curves. To warn approaching cars, the poles' smart networked electronics monitor vehicle speeds and blow a siren.[5]

Integrated systems are necessary for smart roads

edit

Smart roads contain smart lamps, intelligent traffic signs, smart road infrastructure, and intelligent or self-driving automobiles. Communications networks, Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks, huge information, and AI applications are some of the systems, structures, and applications that enable smart roadways. Large-scale sensor networks are necessary for the deployment of smart road systems in smart cities, which generate enormous amounts of data about traffic patterns and public transportation systems. Numerous sensors, including environmental and other ones, transportation applications, linked automobiles, traffic lights, traffic sensors, traffic recording devices, parking meters, and more provide data to these systems. Later on, this data may be used to help city planners remove obstructions and improve traffic flow efficiency while also reducing traffic. By having present time access to traffic data, citizens may better plan their trips and avoid jams, which is another benefit of open data.

Organizations Associated

edit

The standards for this project are critical for execution, with so much technology involved they have expanded the project to a few companies. They are using ST Engineering electronics smart car park platform, as a solution for car parking maintenance. They have created an app for mobile payment services for a more effective and seamless parking service. With parking pricing going up, they are offering a cost-saving operation. Along with partnering with AAEON technology and Mayflower to help local governments and traffic management with improvement decisions.
